Dogs and children form a 'secure attachment' to their primary caregivers
Researchers wanted to discover if cats formed the same bond

Dogs are well known for being loyal and devoted companions, while their feline counterparts are typically aloof and detached.
Now researchers have discovered that this is because cats don't see their owners as a source of safety and security in the same way dogs do, making them much more independent and less reliant.
In particular, they found cats don't suffer from separation anxiety and any noise they make when their owner leaves is more likely to be out of boredom or frustration.
The study was led by Daniel Mills, Professor of Veterinary Behavioural Medicine at the University of Lincoln
He explained that while it is increasingly recognised cats are more social and more capable of shared relationships than previously thought, this latest research shows adult cats are more autonomous - even in their social relationships.
This means they don't necessarily depend on others to provide a sense of protection.

Cats will miss you when you are gone....meaning dead and are not there to open the can of tuna. The cat will starve to death.
Thanks for the day-brightener. Cats are evil. And stupid.
Only after devouring you.
I did have a cat who ‘seemed’ to want me around. She would follow me, actually come when I called her, and let me know when it was time for me to go to bed.
I miss her a LOT.
I had a favorite cat. He lived for about 13 years. One summer I left for a 2 month vacation. The day I returned and walked back into the house, he was so emotional, he threw up. True story. He was definitely happy to see me. Wish he had found a better way to express it. lol
Completely false. I had a cat that would meow and meow when we returned from a long absence. She was not happy we were gone.
My kitties missed me terribly when I worked. When I would come home they would run to the window and meow.
They never did that on weekends. They are gone now, and I miss them so much.
You are right. Your cat missed you.
I will have to politely disagree with the results of this study.
As a professional pet sitter, it is amazing to see how a cat reacts to his owner’s absence. And yes they do form attachments, there is an Ohio State study that indicates the exact opposite of what this post indicates.

My cats may be independent but they definitely know who to come to when they want something like food, water and some loving..
I don’t even bother to tell the kids to feed or water them. The cats just hiss at them. And every morning when I get up they will be waiting for me in the hall way outside my bedroom door and then follow me to the feed dish.
My cat missed me. He used to sit on his perch in front of the window when I’d come home from work every night, then greet me at the door, and follow me all over the place, even to the bathroom.
anyone with a cat knew this ... the study was totally unnecessary
(probably just another wasteful government spending program grant)
Someone opined: Dogs have masters to whom they are loyal. Cats have a staff
I found the same thing, I never thought my cats were completely independent. Maybe it’s a myth started eons ago by dogs, wanting more face time with humans. :)
We have three cat and they act like lap dogs with us . They seek constant reassurance and our protection from those evil lawnmower men!
I think some cats are like dogs
But not many
Total BS.
Yes, it all depends on the cat. When I came back for Jean-Marie after my two week honeymoon, he jumped in my arms and started licking my face. He definitely was very glad to see me back.
The reaction of my two dogs when I come hoe from work is 180 from the cat.
