Amazing intelligent TV from back in the day.
Now we have reality sitcoms with near sex videos 24/7
Everything written by Charles Beaumont or Richard Matheson.
"The Obsolete Man," (can't believe that was Burgess Meredith!), "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" (if only to see Shatner overacting), and "To Serve Man"...
Let’s simplify it to “what is your favorite episode of the TZ?”
The 7th is made up of Phantoms with Greg Morris. William Shatner in Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. I can’t find the title of the ep where the husband and wife can’t get out of a mysterious and deserted small town but they’ve ended up as pets for space monsters.
My top three:
-Death’s Head Revisited. Oscar Beregi, Jr. was one of my favorite character actors. He’s perfectly evil as Luntze, and Joseph Schildkraut’s Becker is the perfect counterpoint. One of the very best TZ episodes.
-The Obsolete Man. Serling’s message about the excessive power of the state, and the importance of the individual rings just as true today as did when this episode premiered back then. Burgess Meredith and Fritz Weaver were both outstanding.
-Dead Man’s Shoes - Not a deep or profound episode, but man, this one’s got style! Very film noirish, with Warren Stevens’ (another old character actor I really like) ability to seamlessly transition between personalities is just great.
The Shelter.
My other favorite was the Hocus-Pocus and Frisby episode with Andy Devine. Probably the most humorous of TZ episodes.
The Obsolete Man, especially the closing monologue, was chilling. I loved every second of it.
then the Shatner episodes on the air plane and in the diner were really cool too.
1. The people in the diner after their bus breaks down in a snow storm and strange things happen at the café.
2. Don’t know the name, but the one with the old man and the dog who drown on a hunting trip, and take a road that leads to the hereafter.
3. The one with the woman in a house after the Civil War watching soldiers walking past her house in large numbers.
The first one I ever saw was Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. I was 10 and it scared the bejeezes out of me. Still my favorite episode.
Burgess Meredith and his desire to have nothing but books in his life.
Impossible to narrow it down to three, but I’ll give you my top one: “Little Girl Lost”. I remember seeing it back when it first came on TV and it scared me so bad I still can’t watch it without getting chills. Other episodes might be scarier to me now, but that’s the one that will always top my list.
Nightmare at 20,000 ft was always a fave.
The one where the people of the US elect a Muslim as president and...
Oh.
Wait.
