One Marin County school district hopes to set a national example when it comes to healthy eating.
Sausalito Marin City School District started serving only organic and GMO-free meals to students this week, becoming the first school district in the nation to do so.
It's an extension of what is considered to be a successful pilot program begun in 2013 at Bayside MLK Jr. Academy in Marin City. The other school in the district, Willow Creek Academy in Sausalito, has now joined Bayside MLK Jr. Academy in installing a permanent program.
The results speak for themselves, Steve Van Zant, superintendent for Sausalito Marin City School District, said in a statement. Since launching the pilot at Bayside MLK Academy in 2013, students are eating real food for breakfast and lunch, discipline cases have dropped dramatically, attendance has improved, food waste is down, and students and teachers sharing of meals has led to improved manners and open communication, greatly enhancing the school community.
The meals, which exceed USDA's recommended nutrition guidelines, are prepared by The Conscious Kitchen, a program from Sausalito nonprofit Turning Green.
I wonder how many illegal immigrants they put out of work by doing this?
Ah yes e-coli and Listeria...a great combination.
Why is it liberals always think the magic formula of EPA + Birkenstocks + organic + Prius = ticket to heaven?
But are they gluten-free?
Marin City is where Tupac’s bodyguard killed a 10 yr old boy while shooting at a rival from a moving car following a rap concert.
When I drove past it I’d sing “in the ghetto”, the Eric Cartman version.
the SKOO is in Marin City.....Marin County’s Harlem so to speak

woo look...a Black Panther...on their “home page” a REAL panther...however
How much of this food is going to go into the garbage because the children won’t eat it and how much more will the tax payers have to increase the school budget to pay the higher costs of this politically correct fad diet?
I don’t buy most of the crap that dieticians and nutritionist spout. I am old enough to remember that eggs and milk went for being nature’s most nearly perfect foods to being treated as if they were poisons and back to being treated as nature’s most nearly perfect foods.
We know that organic foods are more expensive than those not labeled as organic and that they carry more bacteria and other pathogens than the food that is not organic.
We also know there is absolutely no evidence that GMOs are harmful. And we eat GMOs all the time. Just look at your cereal boxes and look for the word “corn” in the ingredients. Corn was genetically engineered by humans about 2,500 years ago in Mexico.
As long as they’re still eating low-fat, high-carb, it won’t matter that they’re eating organic, non-GMO.
Wow, that is a LOT of effect from merely changing the food menu.
ALL food is organic--being organic ourselves, we cannot eat any non-organic substance.
And ALL food raised through agriculture is genetically modified, or "GMO." Human beings have been genetically "improving" foods ever since we discovered agriculture. So, unless the school is serving wild game and plants gathered from the wilderness, they are lying if they claim to be serving "non-GMO." Those bananas couldn't even survive in the wild--they are triploid (three copies of every chromosome), which is NOT a naturally occurring genetic arrangement. And that lettuce--altered from wild lettuce, as are the beans and the corn used to make the tortillas. If that is beef on the tacos--well, the wild ancestor of cows doesn't even exist any more, and cows have changed quite a bit from their ancestor.
Perhaps the school should beef up its science program. It's clear that the administrators have Gaian beliefs, and don't know squat about actual food. Or about why kids behave in certain ways.
I suspect that is the real reason that behavior has improved, time spent with adults.
This sounds like a good experiment. The challenge is to make the food taste good enough so that students eat it.
True, but the cheaper foods are subsidized by illegal immigrant labor, so buying them is a vote for illegal immigration. Plus, they are bred to be transported long distances and picked before they are ripe. How much money do you want to save for a flavorless food?
That’s a;ways the challenge. Most of the food I had in school was bad, but it wasn’t organic or GMO free or anything like that.
How nice for them.
My guess as to their improved discipline statistics, is that they simply raised the bar.
You want fewer kids in trouble? Then simply let them get away with more before you discipline them. In my personal experience school administrators and those above them lie like rugs. Their ability to lie is practically pathological.
Congratulations for whatever they did. I don’t get it. I’d like to live in the nation’s first illegal alien free district. Now that would be something.
Crazy wealthy libs.
They are anti-vaccine as well.
Liberals are anti-science.
