Weekly Preppers Thread

Posted on 08/28/2015 6:23:44 PM PDT by Kartographer

Haven't done one for a while and with all that is going on I though it would be a good idea to do a Weekly Prepper Thread, for posting tips, new products, good prep buys etc.....

“There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.

Underestimation can be fatal.”

I do like the MRE pound cake. To each their own I guess.

Best,

“The difference is I also go ahead and soak mine overnight...”

Two comments about the above:
1. In an emergency it's an emergency and one may not have time to soak beans overnight.
2. Don't confuse me by adding “overnight”. Don't mess with what works: :o) I repeat one more time what works, then I'll deal with protein question you asked:

“I put them in a pot with water to twice the depth of the beans. Brought them to a boil and boiled (don't simmer), for two minutes (just two minutes!). Removed them from heat and let them sit 1 hour. Poured off the used soak water. Covered with new water, added 1 tablespoon oil and 1/2 tsp salt as it said, boiled them 30 min. and they were totally done.”

When one does this for real, add whatever seasoning you want for the final 30 minute boil.

“I was curious to know if there was any indication of how much rice or beans would be needed, if a little bit of protein was available?”

The protein you add is complete because it's protein but you would still need, according to the chemistry below, more methionine to be added to any rice or beans added to the protein you have. Note the quantities of rice and beans below. Now, if you have enough protein in the meat you have for a meal, the rice and beans amount wouldn't matter or just put rice with it or beans with it, not being concerned about the amounts being sufficient for more protein.

The chemistry part: Beans and rice do not have to be eaten in equal amounts in order for the body to break it down into complete protein. Denise Hansen, the dietitian tells us in, “Eating off the Grid” (you really need this book), that the ratio of 3 or 4 portions of grains (rice) to 1 of legumes (beans), is sufficient. Let's see, that's about 4 tablespoons of cooked rice (grain) and 1 tablespoon of cooked beans (legumes), or about 1/2 cup cooked rice and 1/8 cp. cooked beans, or 1 cup cooked rice and 1/4 cup cooked beans. Get the idea? Be sure to eat enough rice with the beans and be sure smaller children don't just eat one or the other. Said another way by Utah State University: “Dry beans average about 22% protein in the seed, the highest protein content of any seed crop. They contain all essential amino acids, except methionine. Methionine can be obtained from corn, rice, or meat.” Remember milk also provides protein.

I was on the Aleutians for a few months with no resupply. We had no vegetables. It got so bad I bought a can of asparagus that was years out of date—not a good idea. Would have killed for a salad or some fresh fruit.

Thank God, I now live in FL. We can grow fresh veggies year round. Dehydrated and freeze dried foods can really help out the variety.

LOL. I have the book. Haven’t read it for a while. IIRC, it did indicate that if you had meat, but not necessarily enough for every one to get adequate rations of protein that you would not need as much rice and/or beans.

Think chili con carne. However, when I was reading the book it was not clear to me exactly how much meat and beans or meat and rice would be needed to “stretch” the meat.
Hence my question.

As I said, my process is the same as yours, except for the overnight soaking, which I would do if I could at all, because more of the nutrients would be more available to my families bodies at a time when nutrients are at a premium.

I am sorry if it confuses you, didn’t mean to do that. Please continue on exactly the same. I was just trying to bring something new to the discussion in case any one might be interested in nutrition for now or an emergency.

Have a great weekend - Sis.

I’ve been intending on getting some essential oils stocked up too. Knew about the peppermint. Hadn’t heard about burns and lavender oil though. Thanks.

Yes, I really can’t believe that such an effective product just ceased to be made. I searched all over the internet - though and never found it anywhere.

The stuff they have on the market for OTC now is next to worthless for even a minor sunburn. Least I haven’t found anything that works well.

In October I have a meeting with Abbott. It will be interesting and I have to be careful. I am adding it to our close the door post meeting notes. I am going to ask. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't think this falls under orphan drugs. I am perplexed by what I have read regarding the effigy of the ointment.

LOL. Well I’m keepin’ all I can for as long as I can. Especially the lowers - that’s the hardest to fit.

Everyone in my family had lousy teeth. My brother had a full set of dentures when he was 16. My sister and Mom had upper plates in their 20s. Dad got full set of dentures when he was late 30s.

They pulled all his teeth at once - he went into shock and almost died - thank goodness he was at the hospital already and they were able to save him.

As soon as I got married, I went to a dentist I knew, and asked him to fix my teeth and let me pay him 10 bucks a month till the bill was paid, and he did it. He thought I would be lucky to make it to 45 without dentures - said what I had left was in good shape. I’m approaching 70.

I have made sure to go to the dentist every year since as much as is needed. I have lost the upper jaw teeth, but still have all the front ones, and all the lower teeth except the ones that were already missing. So at least when I smile I don’t look snaggle toothed. LOL

Good for you! Get the Ball Blue Book of Canning too. It also has freezing and dehydrating instructions and recipes.

Cool. I really wish someone would make it. Maybe it was the yellow color - tended to stain pretty bad - but it was worth it.

I did like that ... I poured Coffee in it and made a pudding.
Main Meal Packet MREs as a rule I didn’t like anything that had a Red Sauce and would trade for pretty much anything but Vegitarian.
No favorites in MREs at all, they were edible, but I aint kidding I’d buy that C RAT Fruitcake. (it is the standard that I judge all fruitcakes by) I know most folks don’t like Fruitcake but again I’m the odd Duck, I could eat it everyday.

QUESTION: Long term meat preparation - How many preppers consider SALT needs for curing meat?

My dad, in his early 80s now, grew up before most rural people had refrigerators, snd smoking meat whole and salt curing was a normal skill everyone in the country life knew how to do.
He said they kept on hand about 400 pounds of salt for a backup salt box.
They also had about 200 pounds in the shed next to the smoke house, where they worked meat and about 100 pounds on the work table in the smoke house.

Thoughts, or suggestions about how much salt to store?

“Marcella, have you used any of the Silver Fire rocket stoves?”

I have a professionally made rocket stove. I have eight or nine ways to cook and the rocket stove is the one I would depend on completely. It is the drop dead one to have due to it’s ability to burn any mass. It will turn twigs into high heat and burn it until there is nothing but a few ashes.

So, the rocket stove, in my opinion, is the number one for dependability.

“I am sorry if it confuses you, didn’t mean to do that.”
Have a great weekend - Sis.”

You are the only “Sis” I have ever had and you are the best. :o)

“confuse” - I have found when writing for numbie preppers, simple instructions are best so they don’t get “confused” so that is why I said it “consuses me” :o) . I clicked on the link you posted and then clicked on a link there. One of the instructions is to add baking soda. I wouldn’t do that as I have read before not to do that. I can’t remember why now but it wruas a legimate reason, so I wouldn’t do it.

That link also says to soak the beans in hot water. As the instructions I posted said to boil the beans for two minutes before taking off fire and soaking, perhaps that is doing the same thing as using hot water and soaking for that long time period, 24 to 48 hours.

A pressure cooker needs constant heat while it is doing its thing and in an emergency situation, you may not have constant heat. It’s simple now since stove tops give constant heat but if one has to use a campfire or canned heat or a fireplace, or a rocket stove, I’d stick with a pot and boiling for thirty minutes instead of a pressure cooker.
