The so-called Environmental Protection Agency will face no fines over some of its regulators accidentally dumping a million gallons of mining waste containing heavy metals, as orange as Donald Trump, into the Animas River in Colorado (and points beyond), potentially poisoning fish and livestock alike.
Needless to say, when some organization that isnt government causes a disaster like this, theres outrage and there are calls for harsh punishments, even demands that we fundamentally alter our relationship to the earth and renounce greed, devise a whole new economic system run by Al Gore or someone, that sort of thing.
In this case, Id imagine activists will say the EPA tried its best. Then, after a period of cognitive dissonance, the activists will find a way to blame capitalism, such as saying that if the whole government were just better funded, it wouldnt make these mistakes. Or perhaps it will say this is all a side effect of industries exerting too much influence on regulatory agencies.

An earlier article on FR today posited the thesis that EPA allowed/caused the spill, to 1) move “Superfund” money its way and 2) give it the authority to further regulate and control all mining in the area.
Never let a perfectly good crisis go to waste, especially if you have had to manufacture the crisis.
How did they decide there is no punishment already?
Once the EPA cleans up the mess they made of the Animas River, they need to get off their @$$es and clean up the mess the made with the coyote population that now infests the entire North American continent. 99% of the coyote population has got to go.
Good job on the new color of the Animas River McCarthy.
There was a very good reason for the coyote population being small.
A large coyote population and a significant human population are oil and water. They don’t mix at all.
Coyotes will feed on anything available from older cows to young calves to chickens and even to your favorite pooch.
When the tree huggers decided to reintroduce the American mountain lion into California, people were excited about it.
Now that those cougars are attacking hikers and wandering into the cities, not so much excitement.
Unintended consequences will bite you in the rear end every time.
Government doesn’t have to explain or apologise.
Clean up costs should come out of their budgets, no additional funding should go them. This is the type of message they send to industry all the time. That should be well into a double digit reduction for a long time.
When I moved to where I’ m living right now (22 years ago), there were cottontails, jackrabbits and Gamble’s quail all over the place. They are all gone now. You may see a cottontail, a young one, every now and then before a coyote scores it. Da ecosystem now consists of only bubonic plague infected rats and prairie dogs and hanta virus infected field mice. Thanks environazis! Good job!
The sad thing is, they are proud of their “accomplishments” and see nothing wrong.
But most of them live in cities and never see the fruits of their labors.
Anyway, they are too busy working on the next great crusade.
I am sorry your piece of heaven turned into a liberal inspired hell.
