What caused the Civil War? That seems like the sort of simple, straightforward question that any elementary school child should be able to answer. Yet many Americansincluding, mostly, my fellow Southernersclaim that that the cause was economic or states rights or just about anything other than slavery.
But slavery was indisputably the primary cause, explains Colonel Ty Seidule, Professor of History at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
The abolition of slavery was the single greatest act of liberty-promotion in the history of America. Because of that fact, its natural for people who love freedom, love tradition, and love the South to want to believe that the continued enslavement of our neighbors could not have possibly been the motivation for succession. But we should love truth even more than liberty and heritage, which is why we should not only acknowledge the truth about the cause of the war but be thankful that the Confederacy lost and that freedom won.

I do not believe one word of this entire post. It is a peculiar version of one of the most studied periods in human history. You may be looking through the wrong end of the telescope. You certainly have a uniquely one-sided perspective.
Actually they did not start the war. It began in Lincoln’s office on April 19, 1861. The Supreme Court declared that fact.
Then in your post #220, you frame a letter I reference as ‘harmless and innocuous’ and then announce that my use of the letter becomes ‘underhanded subterfuge and unprecedented treason.’
Seems as if you should be watching t.v. or something.
I know that Lost Cause Losers believe that.
Nope. But I think I am beginning to see part of the problem here. Here are your comments in regards to the letter:
12/12/1860 In an unprecedented action, Mr. Lincoln sent a secret message to his future subordinate Commander of the Army, General Winfield Scott.................
Lincoln had begun to formulate a plan to seize Ft. Sumter and Ft. Barranas even before his inauguration, and was interfering with the current administration.
My "announcement" is that you misrepresent the letter by exaggerating and jumping to conclusions (hyperbole and extrapolating) by accusing the President-elect of "underhanded subterfuge and unprecedented treason" by your use of the words bolded above. (That is, if in fact those are your words that you posted. You don't seem to be familiar with them.)
correction: your post citing the letter is actually #168. My mistake.
Insults but no factual rebuttal.
If you look back you will see that those are your words, not mine.
HOLD AND RETAKE.........NOTHING AS INNOCENT AS RESUPPLY...IN LINCOLN'S OWN WORDS;
Really?
You seem to have missed an earlier poster who stated flatly that Lincoln was sending ships on an innocent resupply mission. My comment was directed toward that misrepresentation. I also used Lincoln's communication with General Scott to establish a time line that might support a conclusion that Lincoln's comments to Scott were conveyed to Buell, who then set up a suggestion to Anderson to move over to Sumter. That was the interference that was postulated.
It isn’t worthy of serious rebuttal pea. It’s so entirely silly that we’re doing our best not to snigger in your face.
You always run out of reasonable debate and resort to insults.
Go get some popcorn and turn on a soap. We will appreciate your absence.
S.O.P. for this crowd. They generally have little else. Their arguments are mostly just emotion.
I know you are, but what am I?
I hang in there to listen to and respond to reasonable debate - right up until it ends being reasonable or credible. I know that you get upset when I have fun with your more foolish and nonsensical posts. Tough titties. If you don't care for my responses, which are entirely reasonable and appropriate BTW, you are welcome to scroll on by.
When BroJoKe gets put into his place, he just goes away. Why don’t you join him.
Really? That is easily the most asinine claim you've made to date, and just further indicates that you are not to be taken seriously.
And childish crap.
What it means is that I have a comprehension level well above your own, and I am like a man talking to a collection of goats.
I am not surprised at all that you do not grasp the connection.
It always ends the same with rocker.......he runs out of logic and falls back on the insults. Boring.

¡ADM! (¡Ay Dios Mio!)
That court made a terrible decision, but how can you blame that on the Civil War? Clearly, you are paying a steep price for your obsession with the 1860's. The court was dealing with a 21st century issue that has nothing to do with the Civil war. How can you expect to clearly think about real problems that we have today if you begin by assuming that all of our problems must have been caused by the Civil War?
I disagree with the court and I don't think that the Civil War provides the court with any excuse for the mistake that it has made in this case.
