Nothing wrong with him wanting to pay his people above market wages. It is noble, IMHO.
But overpaying by such a huge amount that it causes your company to go out of business is bad for your employees. Better to have a job at market pay or 1.5 times market pay than to have one at 3 times market pay that disappears.

In other words, the least valuable employees got huge raises.
