A Modest Proposal: The Thread Hijack Drinking Game [vanity]
Still me. | Today | Me

Posted on 07/31/2015 11:49:41 AM PDT by Slings and Arrows

The time has come to take action against thread hijackers.

Let me begin with an example of thread hijacking:

Like most Freepers, I am pro-life. Abortion and and euthanasia appall me, and marketing the results even more so. I support candidates who oppose the culture of death, and cheer when it is thwarted.

I also do not find it necessary to mention these facts on EVERY. FREAKING. THREAD.

There is a certain type of Freeper, though, who has no such restraint. For these zealots, any thread that deviates from the pro-life cause, no matter how trivially, is a heresy that must be immediately suppressed.

You are shocked by cruelty to animals? I guess that means you couldn't care less about the cruelty of THE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN ABORTED EVERY YEAR!!!!!

You lost a beloved pet? Why can't you mourn THE THOUSANDS OF ABORTED BABIES WHO DIED THE SAME DAY?!!!!

Your car shredded its transmission and you're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs? Why aren't you thinking about THE BABIES WHO WILL NEVER GROW UP TO BE AUTO MECHANICS BECAUSE THEY WERE ABORTED?!!!!

(OK, maybe I made that last one up.)

Arguing with these people is pointless. It's the same principle as wrestling with a pig - you just get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Similarly, trying to convince them that they are being rude is a waste of time - THE CAUSE is far more important little things like courtesy and respect.

So, what can we do about it?

We can get drunk.

I hereby propose The Thread Hijack Drinking Game. The rules are simple: When a poster tries to hijack an unrelated thread to his or her pet cause, you 1) reply to the hijack attempt by quoting the text in question, followed by the word "DRINK!", and 2) Take a drink (or any volume) of your favorite beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Moderation is suggested on animal cruelty threads to avoid alcohol poisoning.

This game will not, I admit, solve the thread hijacking problem. But after a certain number of attempts we will no longer care.

And if anyone is offended by my little proposal, I can only say...

DRINK!

I used to have an X-acto set in a wooden box, but Igor kept appropriating things from it, so now all I have is one small aluminum handle and no blades.

I used it when I was make miniature furniture.

So cool! Have you any photos left. There used to be a doll house store in the area where I lived for a few years. Had some amazing stuff there. Dollhouse wiring for lights way before glass fiber was available, miniature scale wall papers. Period furniture and such. Quite nice and quite pricey.

Sometimes it blows, and sometimes it doesn’t.

An old whaling ship saying.

No this was back in the day when I was too poor for a camera and film developing was pricey. I wish now that I still had some of the furniture. I think I still have the doll house plans somewhere, though.
The furniture was from one of those “Blank-of-the-month” clubs and I really enjoyed doing it.

A national icon? How in the world did that happen?

Lots to go wrong with an automobile heater, but the good news is that they are simpler than the heater in your house.

Basically, in the wintertime, excess heat from the engine coolant material, (which is water and antifreeze, even in your climate), is routed through the heater coil in front of the passenger’s feet.

The only thing that goes wrong with that is losing some of the liquid, and then not having a path for the liquid to flow through the heater coil. Then the passenger’s feet get cold.

So assuming that works, the other problems relate to air-flow. You can get heat by using the vent position, which lets outside air flow in, over the heater coil, and onto the passenger’s feet. Keep in mind that outside air will require some warming up, so the best way to use this trick is to make the air move slowly.

Of course, slow moving air is a different problem too. Sometimes the flow is stopped by a bunch of leaves that took to hiding in the car so they wouldn’t get raked. You might need to clean out some leaves. (That’s a messy job, but even a teenager can handle it.)

Last is the function of the fan motor, (and its switch, of course). These have various settings from off to full on, and sometimes it’s the variation that’s missing. You could require a “fan motor resistor” to repair the variability function.

And if it’s none of those things, DP will need a new fan motor. Yes, it could be the “squirrel cage”, or it could be the brushes, or it could be the bearings. But all of those repairs require removing the fan motor, so why not replace it?

Sitting in the dark for the past two hours. The local arm of ConEdison says at least 15000 customers are out. Reports of a substation being down due to unknown causes. I opined that a friendly member of the peaceful religion of the order of beheaders blew a hole in the transformer...

There WAS a time when that would have been taken as a joke...

And posting from a smorfphome sucks..

Good to see a true FReeper soldiering on ,there.
Dang the lack of Tesla style inconvenienced electrons, you can't stop me posting.....for I have a Smertphome!

Those transformers do make a wondrous bang when the oil is let out.
There was one developed a leek ,must be ten years ago now, about five maybe six miles from here.
It was halfpast five in the morning when it blew up. Duck and cover, man alive that was loud.
I'm sure it will be fixed by the time you read this, or the Agreco (Scotland's best export) will have been wired in.

Oh, whilst your here....could you give Darks a nudge to move this storm system away from our little island, pls? :)

The Island must have been pushed East over the last couple of days, it just has to have been.
It will take weeks to row it back out again.
