The time has come to take action against thread hijackers.
Let me begin with an example of thread hijacking:
Like most Freepers, I am pro-life. Abortion and and euthanasia appall me, and marketing the results even more so. I support candidates who oppose the culture of death, and cheer when it is thwarted.
I also do not find it necessary to mention these facts on EVERY. FREAKING. THREAD.
There is a certain type of Freeper, though, who has no such restraint. For these zealots, any thread that deviates from the pro-life cause, no matter how trivially, is a heresy that must be immediately suppressed.
You are shocked by cruelty to animals? I guess that means you couldn't care less about the cruelty of THE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN ABORTED EVERY YEAR!!!!!
You lost a beloved pet? Why can't you mourn THE THOUSANDS OF ABORTED BABIES WHO DIED THE SAME DAY?!!!!
Your car shredded its transmission and you're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs? Why aren't you thinking about THE BABIES WHO WILL NEVER GROW UP TO BE AUTO MECHANICS BECAUSE THEY WERE ABORTED?!!!!
(OK, maybe I made that last one up.)
Arguing with these people is pointless. It's the same principle as wrestling with a pig - you just get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Similarly, trying to convince them that they are being rude is a waste of time - THE CAUSE is far more important little things like courtesy and respect.
So, what can we do about it?
We can get drunk.
I hereby propose The Thread Hijack Drinking Game. The rules are simple: When a poster tries to hijack an unrelated thread to his or her pet cause, you 1) reply to the hijack attempt by quoting the text in question, followed by the word "DRINK!", and 2) Take a drink (or any volume) of your favorite beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Moderation is suggested on animal cruelty threads to avoid alcohol poisoning.
This game will not, I admit, solve the thread hijacking problem. But after a certain number of attempts we will no longer care.
And if anyone is offended by my little proposal, I can only say...
DRINK!
In Queens the difference between a Street, an Avenue, and a Road can determine whether you get where you are going or become hopelessly lost in a part of town where whites aren’t so welcome. (Not that they’re racist or anything. They can’t be racist because they’re not white.)
Las Vegas has some of the most screwed up streets I’ve ever been on. Eastern becomes Civic Center Dr at Owens. Stewart becomes Alta when you cross LV Blvd.
MLK becomes Aliente when you cross Craig. Carey becomes Smoke Ranch when it crosses the freeway. Main Street becomes 5th street when it crosses Bonanza.
What are people thinking when they do this stuff? If I hadn’t worked for the bus company I would be totally messed up trying to navigate through town.
Omaha had streets that looked like they went all the way across town.
Except they didn’t, but the street had the same name 2 miles later after ending at one park and re-starting at another.
I think they’re thinking of how funny it would be to get people totally messed up trying to navigate through town.
We have a few streets here that do that, too. The planners must have been high on something.

I’m back from the doctor’s, and I’m really depressed. No date has been set for the surgery, but I have to have about half a dozen pre-op tests to make sure everything goes OK as far as the recovery.
I won’t be able to drive for two months, as I will be in a neck brace. I don’t know how this is going to work. I don’t have anyone who can take me where I need to go including to the surgery.
Maybe tomorrow I will feel better but not today. I feel just as ugly inside as the weather is outside. :o[

Oh, dear. I don’t know what I do in that situation, either.
The surgery is necessary, or I will suffer eventual paralysis, and I’m not willing to do that. That would destroy my soul.
But I have no one to turn to for help. Makes me wish I had some Pink Drink. I had the last of that yesterday. I had no idea the appointment today was going to be so depressing.
Well, one day at a time. If there are tests that have to be done, that gives you time to see what options you have. Maybe the doctor could let you know of helpful resources, if you explain the situation.
There are no resources on a short-term, “sudden” basis. Most of them have a six-month wait for acceptance.
My only option at this time is to apply for some type of ride that covers everything (not just medical) and I don’t know if they will accept me, since I used to work for them and they black-balled me. Long story, that, but that’s the option I’m left with.
Otherwise, I can have either medical or personal but not both.
Some of the tests can be done at the doctor’s office but others require a long wait. Surgery may be six months away, as I have it figured.
All of this has just overwhelmed me and I’ve been close to tears ever since I got home.
Praying now for all of your needs.
