The time has come to take action against thread hijackers.
Let me begin with an example of thread hijacking:
Like most Freepers, I am pro-life. Abortion and and euthanasia appall me, and marketing the results even more so. I support candidates who oppose the culture of death, and cheer when it is thwarted.
I also do not find it necessary to mention these facts on EVERY. FREAKING. THREAD.
There is a certain type of Freeper, though, who has no such restraint. For these zealots, any thread that deviates from the pro-life cause, no matter how trivially, is a heresy that must be immediately suppressed.
You are shocked by cruelty to animals? I guess that means you couldn't care less about the cruelty of THE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN ABORTED EVERY YEAR!!!!!
You lost a beloved pet? Why can't you mourn THE THOUSANDS OF ABORTED BABIES WHO DIED THE SAME DAY?!!!!
Your car shredded its transmission and you're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs? Why aren't you thinking about THE BABIES WHO WILL NEVER GROW UP TO BE AUTO MECHANICS BECAUSE THEY WERE ABORTED?!!!!
(OK, maybe I made that last one up.)
Arguing with these people is pointless. It's the same principle as wrestling with a pig - you just get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Similarly, trying to convince them that they are being rude is a waste of time - THE CAUSE is far more important little things like courtesy and respect.
So, what can we do about it?
We can get drunk.
I hereby propose The Thread Hijack Drinking Game. The rules are simple: When a poster tries to hijack an unrelated thread to his or her pet cause, you 1) reply to the hijack attempt by quoting the text in question, followed by the word "DRINK!", and 2) Take a drink (or any volume) of your favorite beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Moderation is suggested on animal cruelty threads to avoid alcohol poisoning.
This game will not, I admit, solve the thread hijacking problem. But after a certain number of attempts we will no longer care.
And if anyone is offended by my little proposal, I can only say...
DRINK!

I hope you’ve heard from Sally by now. I would hate to think of her going AWOL, even if it was “just for fun.”
I may go out, just to see what it feels like, since the sun is shining, but I think the wind is up. *drat*
The staff coordinator gave her an excuse because it was for a funeral. Hopefully she’s checked in with them if she’s going to be greatly delayed. The people she’s with, although very good-hearted, are not the most punctual at any time.
I would rather not go someplace if I’m going to be late. I’ve been that way since I was a kid. It was always embarrassing to walk into class just before the opening prayer.
I’ll be early for my own funeral!
I left a voicemail as well as a text. All I can do. I will go to pick up Nick the
Carpool Boy at about 5:45 and hope Sally is there.

I hope Sally’s absence is something trivial. Not nice to make the mommie worry!
They’ve made contact. Apparently there was a vehicular difficulty. They’ll bring Sally home, and I’ll go get Nick the Carpool Boy, because I said I would.
Well, after a flurry of text messages, it turns out I don’t have to pick up Nick the Carpool Boy, either. His parents are going up there for something else and will get him.
So now I’ll just go to Walmart and get some sandwiches for Tom and the byos, and then I can be in for the night. I’ll take Bill’s car and get some gas in it.
Would that be solidified fog?

I’d like to get a sandwich at Walmart, but it’s too far to go to spend the amount of money I have left. And there are other things more important.
This has been a strange day for me, and I don’t know why, other than that’s the way the day started.
I’m anxious about that meeting in the morning, and of course, it’s laundry day again. And then Tuesday is my ortho appointment, and I will know then if I will opt for surgery on my neck. With no knowledge of the procedure whatsoever, my inclination is to say, “No!”
Can you look it up?
I could look it up if I knew what it was called, but the research I did gave me several different operations and I don’t know which one it is. When I know, I will do more research and be able to make an informed decision.
Until then, I will just have to chew my nails. Ha-ha.
My father was convinced that one of the operations you could get on your head would be a haircut.

Since it’s dark, why isn’t it bedtime yet? Jake and I are tired!
Sally’s not back yet, but I talked to her. They’ll get here eventually.
Finally! Sally is back. As soon as I get a load of her wash on, I’m going to bed with the cats. If the byos and Kathleen get too loud, Tom can deal with them.
My kids agree.
