The time has come to take action against thread hijackers.
Let me begin with an example of thread hijacking:
Like most Freepers, I am pro-life. Abortion and and euthanasia appall me, and marketing the results even more so. I support candidates who oppose the culture of death, and cheer when it is thwarted.
I also do not find it necessary to mention these facts on EVERY. FREAKING. THREAD.
There is a certain type of Freeper, though, who has no such restraint. For these zealots, any thread that deviates from the pro-life cause, no matter how trivially, is a heresy that must be immediately suppressed.
You are shocked by cruelty to animals? I guess that means you couldn't care less about the cruelty of THE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN ABORTED EVERY YEAR!!!!!
You lost a beloved pet? Why can't you mourn THE THOUSANDS OF ABORTED BABIES WHO DIED THE SAME DAY?!!!!
Your car shredded its transmission and you're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs? Why aren't you thinking about THE BABIES WHO WILL NEVER GROW UP TO BE AUTO MECHANICS BECAUSE THEY WERE ABORTED?!!!!
(OK, maybe I made that last one up.)
Arguing with these people is pointless. It's the same principle as wrestling with a pig - you just get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Similarly, trying to convince them that they are being rude is a waste of time - THE CAUSE is far more important little things like courtesy and respect.
So, what can we do about it?
We can get drunk.
I hereby propose The Thread Hijack Drinking Game. The rules are simple: When a poster tries to hijack an unrelated thread to his or her pet cause, you 1) reply to the hijack attempt by quoting the text in question, followed by the word "DRINK!", and 2) Take a drink (or any volume) of your favorite beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Moderation is suggested on animal cruelty threads to avoid alcohol poisoning.
This game will not, I admit, solve the thread hijacking problem. But after a certain number of attempts we will no longer care.
And if anyone is offended by my little proposal, I can only say...
DRINK!
That’s some expensive power!
Wow. I can’t get the two looms to function in my head like they should. It’s like one is a little more complex than the other, but I can’t decide which one that would be. *sigh*
They’re both really easy to use. The inkle loom is similar to the “backstrap” loom used in South America, but obviously not quite as easily portable.
The triangle loom was historically known as a “walking loom,” because you have to stand and walk back and forth to use the big one.
Not as bad as Texas was. I NEVER had a bill under $100, (2002 to 2005) and I seldom used my A/C or the furnace. This was a one-bedroom apartment, but the water heater and stove were gas. It sucked.
This just makes it harder for me to meet my other expenses. Once I pay the rent and get my pills, the rest of it is downhill, and I have to rob Peter to pay Paul. This time of year is terrible! If my power bills are less, I’m eligible for less energy assistance the next year, but I can’t afford to pay the high costs.
They have us coming and going.
I thought I understood looms, but I can see that I’m missing something vital!
Please, T-c, remind me to call Clark County tomorrow. I just cannot deal with these little agencies who function on little grants. I need an aide who is dependable from an agency that has to adhere to stricter guidelines.
I just can’t do this any more. I am so fed up with these “low-paid” workers who don’t give a darn about the client.
All looms operate either by moving the weft thread over and under the warp threads - like a potholder loom - or by raising and lowering groups of warp threads and passing the weft thread between them.
I will make a note!
I think you said this aide did fine at the work. It’s a shame they can’t handle the scheduling in any rational way.
She obviously didn’t want to come back on Thursday for whatever reason, but my weekends are my own. I don’t want to conduct business on them, and I shouldn’t have to.
She was excellent and thorough, and I was looking forward to seeing her again. And right now, I am DONE with this company and the agency that they report to. Which is why I have to call Social Services tomorrow if I expect to have any GOOD workers.
If they show up when THEY want to, they are no good to me.
I may as well try to do my own work and suffer the consequences.
Oh. And wonder of wonders, Globe Life Insurance accepted me as a client. They called today for some answers to some complex questions they had, and I’m thinking the premium is going to be about $25 a month. I really need to make sure it’s kept in force, as it will help cover my cremation and memorial expenses.
They're betting on senility over seniority. Their bet is that you'll be paying longer than you'll remember why.
I thought the looms were cool. Does anyone know where I can get a "disaster loom"?
Oh wait, I'd better ping Darksheare about that.
The ancient Egyptians made looms by staking out pegs in the sand and running linen threads around them. That’s why they could make such long and wide pieces of cloth.
They repeatedly asked if I was receiving disability as a result of anything I allegedly had. As my mother said, “It is to laugh!”
I’m almost ready to head for bed but I still need to take my pills. Maybe in another 20 minutes...
I had no idea about that, but it explains a lot! :o]
I have studied the history of textiles.
I’m taking a break from sitting in a lawn chair reading a book drinking wine watching Kathleen sit on the toilet. Tom will have to take over when I fall asleep He always keeps late hours.
How many people named Margaret could there have been in ancient Egypt?
Have you seen this book?
And me, with my love of fabrics, have not studied weaving. :buries head in hands: (I am so ashamed...)
GAH! I can’t read that! I’m too BROKE!
Here's something that's almost free, if you're willing to track it down and wrestle with it.
One of my favorite stories, and I didn't write it.
Eight years ago, and a hundred years from now ...
So who died? (Dark Underbelly)
I got that.
Looks cute - maybe it’s in our library.
