Going around is the story of a Democratic activist who encountered diversity on the subway and was culturally enriched with a folding knife. The Federalist goes on some kind of shaming rant of the beta males who watched his encounter with vibrancy, but this is misguided. The better question is why would we expect anyone to help?
The freedom of self-defence has been under full-court attack, particularly by the progressive types of whom Sutherland was a part. If you read his blog and look at the voting record of the man he interned with, Sutherland was in favour of removing peoples ability to protect themselves and others. Why would anyone protect a man who not only is unwilling to protect himself but is dedicated to preventing others from protecting themselves?
Beyond the why, is the how. Contrary to what you see in the movies, fighting off a knife attack is very difficult if youre unarmed and dont have training. Davidson has no clue what hes talking about when he says, Any two adult men in that subway car could have stopped him, no matter how crazy or strong he was. Thanks to Democrats like Sutherland, DC has very restrictive concealed carry laws and bans open carry, among other restrictive gun laws.
The only effective means of stopping stopping a knife attacker is practically illegal in Washington, so how exactly was someone supposed to intervene?

That is genius!
That is genius!
The original FR thread, covering the stabbing story from the Washington Post, from July 5.

Everyone has the right to protect himself from an unjust agressor. This right was not given by the government, and the government cannot take it away.
When someone who disagrees with what I said meets an unjust agressor, I have no sympathy for him.
Because it is the duty of civilized people to stand up to the uncivilized?
Yes, I know, what am I thinking.
You mean if they wrap themselves in a magic rainbow flag, it wouldn’t protect them?
Gosh darn.
Nothing like getting smack upside the head by reality! Idiots!
Those types don't expect Preppers to help - they expect to FORCE the Preppers to "help".
I am troubled that my heart is hardened to these type people, but I just haven’t been able to force myself to give a damn about the effects brought about by their cause. In fact, I quite relish it when *they* are the ones victimized, mostly because I know they intended for me to be the victim.
Bravo, a well written summary on where we are.
What goes round, comes round.
As a family of carriers, it has been shown to us that we had better think very carefully about intervening when black criminals are attacking other (white?) people.
My self or my family? Whatever it takes and the law be damned if necessary.
But how willing are you to flush your life down the toilet for a stranger? Scary that we have reached the point where that is a reasonable question.
I would guess most preppers are not visualizing dealing with decent, honest Americans when they purchase firearms and ammo. In my case, I'm imagining my neighborhood Obama voters, people who think they are entitled to take what they want from others. No one is morally entitled to take. They may have the power to take (and government makes that much easier), but stealing is always immoral. In the absence of government, I want to make sure I have enough power to protect my property and my family from thugs (i.e., liberals).
That's racist.
“Because it is the duty of civilized people to stand up to the uncivilized?”
But when that society tells you not to be armed in a manner that allows you to protect yourself and others then they are telling you NOT to intervene. They get what they ask for.
What isn’t these days.
And a briefcase slammed into the side of the knee would have brought the attacker down.
People tend to regard only guns or, sometimes, knives as weapons and if they have neither they consider themselves unarmed.
They are not anymore then the man who does not have a steak is unfed.
Think of it this way, you don't have a hardened heart, you are just not interfering with God's laws of reaping and sowing.
If you can’t get to the country before things go down the toilet and you live in the city or the burbs your neighbors will shortly become the enemy. Most people don’t have an extra can of chili in the pantry. We have not told anybody we have food. We do make a point to let everyone know we are gun people.
