The first age of solar system exploration is in the books. Related Stories NASA's New Horizons probe flew by Pluto this morning (July 14), capturing history's first up-close looks at the far-flung world — if all went according to plan. (Mission team members won't declare success until they hear from New Horizons tonight.) Closest approach came at 7:49 a.m. EDT (1149 GMT), when the spacecraft whizzed within 7,800 miles (12,500 kilometers) of Pluto's frigid surface.

“Hope it doesn’t take them too long to erase the alien bases...”

I think the announcement was premature. For all we know, the probe may now be in the cargo bay of a Vogon freighter.

31,000 miles per hour is “real slow”?

That Pluto voyage started way before 0boz0 took office (planning, building the probe, etc.) and I bet Barry will take credit for NASA’s remarkable feat.

I saw one of the NASA “politicians” say the same thing this morning, about 2 minutes after closest approach. He credited the “completion of exploring the solar system under President Obama.” The probe was launched under President Bush II in 2006. OAsshole had NOTHING to do with it. Any association of OAsshole with this spacecraft and its achievements is despicable.

If Charon is reflective, i.e. white, that amount of light should be significant to show Pluto night side details [...]

Weeks ago, Charon was determined to have an albedo (i.e., reflectivity) of 36-39% - comparable to Earth's. While that does not make them "white," it does mean that Charon sheds sufficient light upon the dark side of Pluto for NH's camera to discern significant details.
