Jack Carter, whose brash, caustic comedy made him a star in early television and helped him sustain a career of more than a half-century in TV, nightclubs, movies and on stage, died of respiratory failure at his Beverly Hills, California, home, a family spokesman said.
Carter turned 93 just four days before he died Sunday, Jeff Sanderson said.
In 1948, when network television was beginning, Carter starred in a series of variety shows on ABC. In 1950, Pat Weaver, the visionary NBC programmer who fostered the "Today" and "Tonight" shows and other innovations, scheduled two hours of programming called "Saturday Night Revue."

RIP
Very Old School
I saw him many times when I was a kid. Sorry he’s gone, but he had a long and apparently full like.
He was crushed to death in the movie Alligator.
Everybody knew his name because he co-starred in so many films and tv shows, but he just never got to that top echelon.
Last thing I saw him in was the TV show “Shameless”
He played “Stan”, a crusty old bar owner.

He appeared in this Season 6 episode of Sanford and Son:

Series was coming to an end at that point and not nearly as good as earlier on.
Wow. I remenber him from the 70s. Glad he was still around this long, even if I haven’t heard from him in a long time.
My uncle was a professional harmonica player in the early-mid 1940s (he died in WW II). I always remember my grandmother had a picture in her collection of a theatre marquee with my uncles name on it (among several others). One of the other names on the marquee was Jack Carter. They both had to be in their early 20s at the time. He was performing stand-up comedy (or perhaps he was the Emcee) while my uncle performed music. Every time I saw Jack Carter on TV I thought about how my uncle and he crossed paths once so many years ago. Seeing his obit here made me think of it just one more time.
As much as I loved the series, that Season 6 episode of Sanford and Son with him in it that I linked to in 8 was pretty bad.
FTA: The late Bob Thomas, former Associated Press writer, contributed to this report.
? Did he write from the here after?
I remember him very well and recently wondered whether he was with us.
Lol. Obviously they meant material that was previously on file. Still, it does sound a bit strange.
RIP.
The late Bob Thomas, former Associated Press writer, contributed to a canned obituary that was filed away. He (Thomas) expired waiting for Carter to die. This is just an awkward way of giving him credit. Which I’m sure he appreciates.
I was so proud when I instantly recognized him by his voice in Shameless. Thought he had died years ago. RIP
R.I.P. Jack! He was one of those old school comedians that I remember so fondly from the golden past...and what garbage we have today passing for “funny men”....
Obits for famous old people are often kept on file waiting for the right occasion. You can be sure that the New York Times has obits of Jimmy Carter and Kirk Douglas ready to go.
