For 26 years, Pete Rose has kept to one story: He never bet on baseball while he was a player.
Yes, he admitted in 2004, after almost 15 years of denials, he had placed bets on baseball, but he insisted it was only as a manager. But new documents obtained by Outside the Lines indicate Rose bet extensively on baseball -- and on the Cincinnati Reds -- as he racked up the last hits of a record-smashing career in 1986. The documents go beyond the evidence presented in the 1989 Dowd report that led to Rose's banishment and provide the first written record that Rose bet while he was still on the field.

Nice hyperbole. No, he does not need to go to jail (unless his betting violated some local law), but he should not be bestowed with the greatest honor the league has.
2. This was Forty years ago or more. Not only was it not of great importance at the time, many of the people it was important in any way to have grown old any dissemination died. Their little tempest in a teapot needs to die too.
3. In that era many of the players bet off the record. Back through the sixties the majority probably did. Big whoop. They generally bet on themselves and their friends to win.
4. Grow up. This level of acrimony over people paid huge sums to play children's games speaks of an enduring childishness that really grates on working people who adopted adult interests.
He burned out his bullpen on the days he had money on the game and no so much when he didn’t. F-him!
Living in KC we had George Brett.
One of the biggest douche bags I ever had the oppertunity to meet 3 times. Every single time he was a condescending a—hole.
I agree completely. Those folks who still want to see Pete Rose in the Baseball HOF should grow up! /sarc
No dweeb, gambling on games you're personally participating in.
Subtle difference, like the one between a blade of grass and a sledgehammer.
No dungeons needed...his misdeeds don't warrant any. They *do* warrant a permanent ban on entry into the HoF...as well as the permanent disdain of those who truly love the game.
Gambling was against the rules? Big, fat, hairy deal.
I'll never visit Cooperstown until MLB ends its vendetta against Pete Rose. The Baseball Hall of Fame has no legitimacy without Pete Rose as a member.
It's been long enough, and the hysterical bleating of the naive and mean-spirited purists has grown tiresome.
I guess these guys who juiced with steroids during the last 20 years belong in the HOF, because technically PED's weren't "against the rules" during that era?
Baseball is diminished without the presence of Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame. Period.
Proudly and Sincerely,
Pete Rose Apologist
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Pete shouldn’t be eligible for the HOF until he has served his lifetime ban.
And if it is true that he bet on the games AS A PLAYER, then he should not be eligible for the HOF until Shoeless Joe Jackson is eligible.
And there ya have it. Must be my problem right there, because no way in hell can I get passionate about a kid's game played by adults who make far too much money. Enjoy that baseball game, booze and big screen TV. Never mind that America is burning. We need to keep Pete Rose out of the HoF!!!!
This particular thread's about baseball. There are plenty of other threads about this country's perilous state.
Which make Pete Rose's HoF status completely and entirely irrelevant. But hey, who am I to judge?
If you’re not interested don’t click. Not a terribly difficult concept.
Sad but true.
One should not confer on that actor the real wisdom of the writer simply because of the ability of an actor to parrot the words of writer convincingly of stage or screen.
We have all heard of stolen valor when a non-veteran assumes the mantel of a war hero, well actors assumes stolen wisdom when they assume the mantel of a political pundit and speak on controversial political topics.
I agree with both of you that there are ways to bet against your team while still trying to win. That’s why I stated that Rose needed to be punished for breaking the rules - after all, betting nearly destroyed baseball in the Black Sox scandal. My real question is whether Rose should continue to be punished...and I think that he’s paid the price at this point in terms of both reputation and money. Others may disagree, and that’s OK - this is just my opinion.
Good. I figured if he was exonerated I would never again run into a HOF Rose at one of his numerous Las Vegas signings
Never heard THAT before, how about giving us the whole story?
That IS the whole story. My brother and I got baseballs signed by the whole team except Rose. This was probably ‘79 or ‘80.
Consider it a blessing then. Since he was banned from baseball his signature on your ball would devalue it.......
I’m actually surprised they didn’t find this during the original investigation from the late 1980’s.
