The Ohio police officer who missed when he shot at a charging 40lb dog and accidentally hit a four-year-old girl in the right leg has been identified as a five-year veteran of the force. [snip]
Thomas was investigating a hit-and-run case when he heard cries for help from a nearby home in Whitehall regarding the girl's mother, who had cut herself, the Columbus Dispatch said.
When the officer tried to enter the home to provide help, the family's mixed-breed dog charged at him in the doorway, said Columbus Police Department spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis.
He fired off a shot but missed as the bullet accidentally struck the girl instead, NBC4 reported. [snip]
'[The officer] was a big guy and they have tasers and clubs and stuff,' Parlsey told 10tv. 'I don't know why you would raise a gun. I really don't agree with him just pulling his gun out and trying to shoot the dog.' [snip] 'They should have better training for situations like this,' Baker added.

Because the gene pool is lower?
Because you're an evil white knucle-dragging hetero-breeder Bible-thumper and you're RAAAAAcist.
That's why. And don't you forget it.
Just a question: can I go into this cops backyard and shoot his dog???
I couldn’t live with myself if I made that mistake.
The court would say “Well his heart was in the right place, accidents will happen. Next case >bang<”
What a world. Mailmen have more guts than cops do, nowadays.
Maybe the 4 year old was threatening him. You know, with a plastic toy or a smelly diaper.
Will you come to my house and save me from the meth-head holding a gun to my head demanding a fix?
Actually mail men do not have to go on your property if they don’t like your dog. Come down to the PO and pick it up.
But mailmen do get charged by dogs, and they don’t have to shoot those dogs.
Gee looking at those photos, it looks like white-trash city.
And newspaper delivery persons. At 13, I was a paperboy in Alaska. I delivered at the end of town, surrounded by wilderness, where people kept dogs big and mean enough to scare the bears away from going through their trash cans. Those were the dogs I dealt with on a daily basis and I never shot one of them, although there were a few that I had to smack down from time to time. I never got bit either.
I'm pretty sure postal carriers aren't allowed to carry guns.
I thought the first piece on this a few days ago said the dog was on a leash.
Or was that another one. I’m losing count of the canine homicides.
Also, ditto to another poster. Why am I, as a CCDW holder held to a higher standard with a gun than a (supposedly) well trained LEO is held to?
“Charging dog” my @$$!
The dog was barking!
Cops have been taught its ok to shoot barking dogs, so they do.
No “threat” is necessary.
We used to demand police officers be tough enough to take a dog bite and subdue the dog.
This shoot first policy with family house pets has got to stop. Who and what the hell do these cops think they are?
Are they that big of babies that they can’t deal with a little hose pet without shooting them? Now they miss and shoot a little kid? This makes me sick.
No, and in the general case neither will the police.
Meant- house pet
