The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Greetings from the Rain Drenched lil' acre in the Rain Forest of Missouri. Water Water everywhere. Serious Flooding with more to come.

Can't get the garden beds ready, as they don't dry out. Every thing already planted is growing like weeds. Lawn is too, and the self propulsion on the mower has quit and can't be fixed. Our hillside is too steep to do with out this feature, so Hubby is getting a new mower for Father's Day.

We have a few small green tomatoes. Nothing ripe yet.

I know I am missing a couple of names that were supposed to be added to the list, but I can't find my notebook which I use to aid my memory. So if you didn't get a ping, please let me know and I'll set it up.

I have had a report from Kathy that Arrowhead has made some progress, so I'll try to link to that shortly. I have been praying for both Arrowhead and Johnny.

No update on Johnny, and he hasn't posted for a few days, so I am praying and praying for him.

I have been meaning to write an update for a while now but I have had a trip to Texas planned for the last month, so I wanted to see things first-hand before I sent this to you. I actually just returned from my week-long trip down to see him, and have been able to visit him at St. David's Rehab in Austin. I can definitely say that he has made some really good progress! Every weekday, Dad goes to Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy, and I was able to see that some good things have happened. Over the few days that I was able to go visit with my mom, I saw the following: Physical Therapy: In conjunction with the Physical Therapists, Dad has been able to stand up from his wheelchair with assistance. The therapists then stand on each side of him and help him walk, usually around the halls. He does have trouble controlling his feet and his balance, so walking unassisted is not an option for fear of him tripping or falling, but I have seen significant improvement from the last time I visited. I used to watch him go only 20 or 30 steps over an hour (heavily assisted), and would say that now that number is easily in the hundreds of steps (200-300) over the PT hour - still quite assisted, but not as much as before. He has also been able to help do the transfer from the bed to his wheelchair with much more success, which is great. This task used to take 2-3 people to help, but now usually 1 person can help him to do this in the morning. Occupational Therapy: The OT therapists have told us that Dad has been able to help dress himself a little bit more, things like helping to pull pants up, shirt down, etc. When he does go to occupational therapy, he does well in a quiet, calm environment; one major side effect of the brain injury is his tendency to get distracted very easily.... he's curious about what those sounds are from across the room or what those people are doing over there! In one of his sessions, we watched him stick the 1-12 numbers on a wooden clock with help from the therapists. Some of them he got right the first time, some of them ended up wrong, but with assistance and talking-it-through they got moved to the right place. In the end the clock was completed correctly... again, with a lot of direction and help. The OT staff was happy with the clock activity the day he did this, because he was able to stay relatively focused on a task for a full 25 minutes. All-in-all, they told me they were thrilled with how far he has come since he arrived. Speech Therapy: I wasn't able to see speech therapy while I was there, but did meet his speech therapist. One of the things she has worked on with Dad is speaking up - when he talks, he has a tendency to whisper which makes him very difficult to understand. Occasionally he will talk louder, and the understanding is better, but that continues to be one of his hurdles right now. He is still not able to swallow correctly, so cannot get off of the feeding tube just yet, but that may come with time. I've noticed that I can understand him more and that when asked a question, he does seem to answer logically most of the time. Overall, his speech is an area we have seen a notable improvement in. St. David's Rehab has been a fantastic place for Dad, and everyone there has been incredibly kind to our family. Dad has been there for 2 months now, which is longer than most rehab patients, so we're told that he's the floor's "celebrity." He hates to stay in his room so as often as he can, he pulls himself around the halls in his wheelchair and just moves about. The doctors, nurses, and therapists know him and interact with him as he makes his rounds, and just let him roam and ask him how he's doing as he goes by. (He can't get to the stairs or the elevators - they lock-down when he gets close with one of the bracelets he wears.) Whenever my mom and I got to the hospital, we always had to play the game of "Wonder Where John Is Today" and we would always find him in the halls, the common area, behind the nurses station, or occasionally just hangin' out in someone else's room! Last bit of news: we have received word that Dad has made enough progress that he has been approved to go to a special brain injury rehab program, called CORE Health Care Rehab in Dripping Springs, TX. He will have long days of therapy during the week, going from 2-3 hours to I believe 5-6 hours a day - woo hoo!! He will be moved to that facility on July 6th and has been approved automatically for 90 days, with the possibility of staying for up to 180 days depending on how the first 90 go. This is absolutely, positively AWESOME news and we are all really excited about it. If anyone would like more information about that facility (mailing address, hours, etc.) I can surely get that information for you - Mom still reads all of Dad's cards to him as she gets them, and he has them hanging in his room. My apologies for this long email, but I'll end with a story: In my visits with Dad, I've had moments where he gets angry or frustrated with me or with one of the nurses, but it is always a good thing! It is usually during these frustrated moments that he has ah-ha moments. On the last day I was visiting, it was time for lunch and his nurse Molly was trying to get to his feeding tube. She must not have been doing it exactly as Dad wanted, because he stopped her, looked her right in the eye, and said, "Now hold on - there are certain ways that you are supposed to do certain things!" I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing. The day before, one of the therapists said that he told them to "just wait a cotton-pickin' minute" because they were asking questions too fast. He certainly hasn't lost that special brand of John-attitude, which I'm sure you know very well! It's all good here in the southern reaches of Puget Sound. Tomatoes, corn and green beans looking good, our 90+ rhododendrons are done blooming but our 14 hanging flower baskets are really taking off.
The Goodyear blimp is being based at our small town airport for the U.S. Open golf tournament across the sound near Tacoma, it's flown over our place several times. Haven't seen one up close since the Seattle World's Fair in 1962.

Great gardening news. We haven’t ever seen a blimp around here. The medical evacuation helicopters fly right over our house at a rather low level.

We also get quite a few jets I assume part of the air national guard.

Now that the sun is finally shining in Western Colorado, and it would seem the hail has finally gone, what little remains of my efforts this year is growing good! I've ended up with 4 (I started with 25) tobacco plants, 3 tomato (started with 30), 4 squash (started with 15) and 2 ghost chile (started with 15).

The tobacco is beautiful. I really wish I had as much as I started with, but oh well. I'll go again next year, and start out later this time. I started far too early this year, and it stunted the growth of some of my stuff (I had Devil's Tongue chile plants that sprouted in February, and are still alive, but only about an inch and a half or so tall). I don't know that they are going to do anything or not. We'll see.

Event season has begun, so I'll be hitting some of the fairs and expo's we've got locally with my leather goods, and a new line of hand tied flies. Looking forward to that. On top of that, I'm organizing the Prepper Fest & Survival Expo here in town (facebook.com/prepandsurvive) on July 25th, so that's keeping me occupied at the moment.

I miss the rain already!!!! The hail can stay away, but I have been enjoying all the rain we've had over the past year!

I spent two hours in the garden with the weed whacker earlier this week. If it were to crack off sunny right now it would take a week to dry out enough to get the tiller out.

So in the meantime I’ve been picking peas. I’ve got about a gallon and a half of them shelled out now. Three more gallons yet to shell, and twenty feet of row left to pick after that. I’m so sick of shelling peas the rest of em might get fed to the chickens.

Yes beer works. I use tuna cans and sink them into the ground, then pour in the beer.

Must be. We sure have an excess. Not just from the rain. The lawnmower isn’t the only thing that quit - air conditioner is on the fritz too.

I started too early too, but the rain is making me late with transplants. Hope all your events are good for you.

Yeh quite a dump of rain up there in Mo, Ok, Tx and elsewhere. Getting some tomatoes now in the 5 gal containers. Some have end blossom rot-—ughghghg— periods of real wet to real dry back to real wet will do that. I was gone for 12 days in early June a hot, dry period in N Tx until the recent rains. Mother is unconcerned with fairness and equality regarding the weather.
Prayers up for all our ailing FReeps in this imperfect world.

Ha.. good thought about the alcoholic slugs. Going to try that once the rain lets up. San Antonio is again drenched. Cukes are the summers winner so far. Been through a dozen of them and they are delicious. I am using them instead of Mozzerella for my caprese salad. (Forced weight reduction mode) Also use them in my Japanese cuke salad.

Few green tomatoes out there. Already picked some and they are far better than the store. My jalapenos and green peppers never materialized. Plants are big and getting flowers, but they won’t close the deal. Will wait until the sun comes out and give them another week or so. If nothing, they can kiss their pepperbutts goodbye.

Corn broke through. Will see how that fares. Carrots are drenched so not sure what they will do. I still have 3 squares in each 4x4 open for planting. Any suggestions for June in San Antonio?

And of course, prayers out for Arrowhead and Johnny.

Well, peas don’t do well here, so we have to get strawberries, which weren’t very good this year, thanks to neglect last year, and early tomatoes.

Hubby used the weed wacker to address some of the overgrown front lawn. New mower won’t be in for a while. If we get 2 days of dry weather, I may just plant a bunch of stuff even if the beds aren’t prepared.

Heat can be a factor in fruit set. Is it hot in Texas right now?

Texas needed it more than Missouri, so I’m glad that some rain was shared this spring.
