The first time I saw GoodFellas, on a rented Blockbuster videotape in 1991, I was in a daze as the final credits rolled. If I had been a cartoon character, I would have had stars dancing around my head like Wile E. Coyote. I turned to my girlfriend and said, Whatd you think? Boy movie, she declared and I knew our relationship was doomed. Just kidding. (We split up because I was a jerk.) But women dont get GoodFellas. Its not really a crime drama, like The Godfather. Its more of a male fantasy picture Entourage with guns instead of swimming pools, the Rat Pack minus tuxedos.
GoodFellas, which starting next week will have a 25th anniversary showing at the Film Forum on Houston Street, and whose 25th anniversary Blu-ray DVD just hit the streets, takes place in a world guys dream about. Way down deep in the reptile brain, Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Jimmy the Gent (Robert De Niro) and Tommy (Joe Pesci) are exactly what guys want to be: lazy but powerful, deadly but funny, tough, unsentimental and devoted above all to their brothers a small group of guys who will always have your back. Women sense that they are irrelevant to this fantasy, and it bothers them.

those are 7 entertaining “crime/mob” movies for avoiding 7 days of lousy summer primetime programming. ;)
also, Layercake is pretty good too!
The movie has special meaning in my household because my husband was working for another airline, in the attached cargo building, the night of the heist.
And he didn’t hear a thing.
Perfect timing as I’m re-reading Wiseguys right now and a lot of the movie dialog is verbatim from the book.
How about the "Rockford Files"?
That theme song was pretty good. I’ll bet that musician did pretty well for himself.
wink wink... right... did not hear or see anything at all. I got ya.
Sorry... Am female (real DNA, not transgendered) and watch it every time it is on tv, while my husband falls asleep about 90 minutes into it. Also, loved the redemptive grace of “Pulp Fictin” and HATED the denigration of “Get Shorty”.
Uh, want to rephrase that?????????
Mrs Palace and I both grew up on Long Island. We knew these people from grade school. We both loved it.
My husband scheduled his college classes around reruns of The Rockford Files. He introduced me to the show and I like it. I heard Stephen Cannell interviewed on a local radio show telling about how they came up with the premise, pretty funny.
I used to live in Joseph Colombo’s old neighborhood. It’s amazing how much it’s changed in just a few decades.
LOL.
Now that you mention it...yeaaaaaahhhh.....
DeNiro was flat our scary the way he played the part of “Jimmy” Conway.
what neighborhood did he grow up in? the old Italian enclaves are moving around. Staten Island still a stronghold lol.
as far as this thing, Russians and Albanians have certainly grabbed a piece out here.
Even after being spared an indefinite prison sentence and getting away from it with his life, Henry Hill didn't learn anything. He resented the fact that all of the unearned, coerced wealth he received because of his Mob connections was gone, and that he was being placed on the same level as "schmucks" who actually earned their livings honestly.
