Flaming Hawk With Snake in Its Talons Sparks Fire Near La Jolla
NBC Bay Area ^ | Tuesday, Jun 9, 2015 | R. Stickney

Posted on 06/09/2015 5:58:35 PM PDT by nickcarraway

The cause of an early morning fire north of San Diego was an electrocuted bird falling from an active power line

A bird carrying a snake in its talons struck power lines north of San Diego, sparking a hillside fire just west of The Merge.

San Diego Police arrived to the location on Dunhill Street near the intersection of Interstates 5 and 805 just before 6 a.m.

Flames were burning very close to businesses including the General Atomics building, officials said.

Officers called in San Diego Fire-Rescue crews who contained the fire within an hour.

Fire officials initially told NBC 7 a bird with a snake in its mouth was electrocuted on a power line and fell to the ground, sparking the fire. A photo released by officials later shows the snake in the hawk's grasp.

"A hawk that hit the high voltage power line, caught fire, and fell to the ground," SD Fire-Rescue spokesperson Lee Swanson said in a written release.

There were no structures damaged and no evacuations ordered.

This area of San Diego is home to many companies in the region's biochemical industry.

Maybe I just need to install Linux and wade through it as best I can.

Well...

I'm thinking that if FireFox is a challenge, you really might NOT want to play with Linux.. Even though there are some very good and user friendly distributions (I have Mint 17.2 on my Linux box and on my old former WinXP laptop and I like it) it is an entirely different breed of bird. If you think Windoze stuff gets complicated I'm not sure you're ready for the experience. Not to mention that those here on the UT who could help walk you through it are a bit farther away than a stroll around the block.. ;-)

There are three lines, but it has, New Window, New Private Window, Save Page, Print, History, Full Screen, Find, Options, Add-Ons, Developer. OK...question mark.

Addons is where you check for plugins like flash and java. Click that and you'll get a page called 'addons manager.' If you select 'plugins' it will list what is installed. Presumably flash, java, and such should be there. At teh top of that list is a line that says 'check to see if your plugins are up to date.' Click that and it will check, and let you know what is outdated, and let you update it.

The question mark when you click it gives you another menu and down at the bottom of that list is 'about Firefox'. If you click that it will tell you what version and probably download an update if there is one.

While you're rummaging around with it, I'm going for a caffeinated beverage - hot - with half and half.

It has Java Platform, Shockwave for Director, and Adobe Acrobat and a couple of others I’ve never seen. Also, Wild Tangent Detector.

As for the question mark, I was confused by what it shows. If I do this stuff early enough in the day, I can usually muddle through, but I’ve already been awake for eight hours, so my thinnin’ is a little off, Baba.

(CFIDS at work. Sorry if it sounds like a litany...)

I KNOW we have Communists here...in LV Valley. Thankfully, them and liberals are pretty much out-numbered by active duty and retired military. And that makes me feel pretty good!

Depending on what the others are they probably go with whatever was loaded on the machine. Wild Tangent for instance comes with some preinstalled games. Of course if you don't play those games it's just bloat, but it does 'phone home'... Here's some info on Wild Tangent: "Wild Tangent is a software company that specializes in 3D video games played over the Internet. It has recently joined with AOL to create games for AOL’s Instant Messenger games. Wild Tangent games are not spyware but they do gather information about the user’s computer and send this information to Wild Tangent. Wild Tangent software is not conventional in its install process, so sometimes it does not uninstall as easily as other programs."

On the page listing the plugins, did you click the blue line at the top that says 'Check to see if your plugins are up to date'?

Surprised it has Shockwave Director on it but Adobe Flash (also listed as Shockwave Flash) isn't listed, but then if it has some of those Wild Tan games on it, they use Shockwave, so I guess that makes some sense.. You can get Flash here. This link will take you to the Flash download page.

Oh looky, a thunderous storm..

As for the question mark, I was confused by what it shows.

If you click the ? you should get a screen with a list of 'help' items. At the bottom of that list should be 'About Firefox'. If you click the 'About Firefox' you should get a popup box that among other things will have the FF logo, the ID (Firefox) and the version number right under the Firefox name. It will either indicate 'Firefox is up to date' or will let you know a newer version is available (and will probably start downloading it if there is since that is the default setting.)

Now that I've confused you enough for the remainder of the day, I'll go back to re-waterproofing my boots. The laces broke - one about a month ago and I 'spliced' it with a square knot - and the other one this morning so after I remove the damaged laces and relegate them to cat-toys, and before I install new laces, I have a 'clear' boot to smear squished mink on.. ;-)

Yes, that’s true. Many of our old Democrat voters are conservative in a lot of ways, and the people they elect are just old-fashioned crooks, not radicals!

I have tried to download Flash (originally wrote “Flask”) Player three times since being forced to use FF. It won’t let the program install, so now, I don’t know how to make it work.

Of course, I could wait for Win10 to install...

I deleted Wild Tangent because in my gaming experience, it was messing up the computer. I never use internet games (with multiple people) and none of them that are installed on this computer are things I would play, anyway. So Presto! it was gone.

I “refreshed” (as opposed to the politically incorrect “updated”) FF early this morning.

Dead Corpse has been helpful, too, so when you weren’t available, he was! All y’all geeks are like a set of chessmen. Each of you have your qualities, and all of you must be present to work properly.

Interesting. What isn't letting Flash install - firefox or winHate? (what does the notice say?)

I know that some flash updates won't install if FF is running. If that's the case, go to that download link I sent, download flash (make sure you uncheck the 'install the super special free McAfee crap offer' box), and tell it to save (as opposed to run). When the download is done, click on the down-arrow up in the top right (the one that will say 'display progress of your download' or some such when you hover over it). If you click that arrow it should open a list of your latest downloads. The flash that you just downloaded should be at the top of that list (if you have downloaded it several times, it might be listed more than once.) Right click on the 'flash' download and select 'open containing folder'. When that window opens (and it should open with the flash file highlighted), close FireFox. When FF closes out, then double click on the flash install file, tell the Windoze nag screen that you really want to do what you told it to do, and Flash should install. When it is done it will open FF (or whatever you have set as default browser..) to verify the install.

Anyway, if that installs without any nag screens, the next time you open FF and go to that 'add-on' list, Flash should be listed in the plug-ins section.

Yah...I been wanting one all day, thinking if I can relax, I may be able to get my mind to accept all the new stuff. So I’m going to hang tough until Monday, which is payday for me. In the meantime, I will *wish* for something cold and alcoholic... Even though I know you don’t imbibe.

With CFIDS, some days, understanding something is often facilitated by relaxing the brain.
