ollowing the exciting news that Windows will be free for everyone currently on Windows 7 or 8.1, providing they upgrade within the first year, users should also be aware of a few features that will no longer work with Windows 10 after that upgrade.
The features that will no longer work are taken from the official specifications page on Microsoft's Windows website, and reproduced below. The good news is that in some cases alternatives are available.

I don’t think I will go for the free upgrade to 10. I am transitioning slowly to Linux . I am not a geek so I don’t just zip through such a transition and I want to keep some of my ancient W95 compatible software like MGI photo but I don’t know how to attach it to Linux. I kept W2000 until not much was compatible with it any more. I am not eager to jump to the New Thing. If it works and I’m used to it I am not eager to dump it.
I have Windows Media Center that came with W7 and works great. I don’t want to go find something else with W10.
Didn’t work - I did exactly that and there was no “Cancel reservation” to select. It just says “All Done For Now” “There is nothing else you need to do etc etc ....” and there’s the “CLOSE” button to click. That’s it.

There are a HUGE number of us.
I think Win7's persistence will make even XP's historic longevity look pale in a few years.
I had Nero for XP, didn’t work on Vista. My laptop has been upgraded to W7 and it works just fine. I should have waited to see what W10 looks like and its faults before I signed up. Now I’m afraid it will be loaded and I don’t want it.

That wasn't accidental. Not one bit.
Microsoft knew in the mid-90's (circa Win95) that the MS-DOS based original Windows branch (1/2/3.11/95) had to die, and that they'd have to pry it out of people's hands forcibly.
Towards the end of the 90's, Win98 was extremely popular, but the up-and-coming NT branch of Windows, which was a much better but entirely separate product line technically, was considered only for servers (NT 4.0). They needed to get the populace switched over from MS-DOS Windows to NT Windows.
So they intentionally BROKE the MS-DOS branch of Windows, with Win-ME. It was designed and intended to be SO BAD that people would move to WIN NT 5.0.
Win NT 5.0 was rebranded as "Windows 2000". It picked up some steam, but the real break came with XP.
That whole scenario was planed in advance, and played out exactly as they intended. It was no accident whatsoever.
XP cypher isn’t a high enough level (I need 256b for some of our vcenter clusters and other management platforms and there is no fix for XP or the browsers... it’s just done unfortunately. I suppose one could try to downgrade the web and ssh daemons to accept the lower cypher levels, but it got to be too much of a fight and I just moved on to win7 which I’m getting along with pretty well. I just couldn’t deal with v8.x and the interface. im stuck dealing with 2012 server more and more every day now and I hate it just as bad if not more.

Yeah... kinda that for me too - There is a little icon in that dialog... three horizontal bars upper mid left IIRC... click that for a pulldown... I did something through that and got it reversed...
It’s the usual.
Microsoft shifts one icon over and it’s 100 posts of people bragging about how they use 14 year old MS OSs, and MS should never do anything with their product, or how they are going to use Linux. Blah blah blah.
No wonder the left utilizes technology so much more effectively than we do. We have too many geezers that actively run from EVERYTHING.

I hate windows 8 or 8.1, whatever I have, so I can’t wait to upgrade to 10.
Thanks for the information. Nice to know they’re being considerate of their customers... that tends to work better in the long run.

Different in many ways:
Only if you do a fresh install every time you BSOD.
You only reserved the download of Windows 10. It will not be installed unless you choose to install it.
