Couldn’t agree more. One of the most over-rated pictures ever. It’s not even the best World War II movie of 1998.
The Sands of Iwo Jima
I recall interviews with Marines on Iwo. They said the sand was so hot because it was volcanic. You couldn’t dig much of a trench because it got hotter as you went deeper - and pretty soon too hot to get into. But, they would dig a small hole a bit deeper to heat their rations!
And it was deep, loose sand. The two steps up, one step back kind. It almost seemed that they hated the sand more than the enemy in their recollections.

Speaking of WWI - “The Lost Battalion”. I LOVE this movie. And that it is based on a true story makes it better. IIRC one of the pigeons is in the Smithsonian or somewhere.

I think they just went back as far as the Civil War, but it was good. I liked "Where Eagles Dare" also. Of course, I liked Mission Batangas with John Wayne. I have lots of friends in Batangas. I liked the Great Raid with Ben Bratt and James Franco, in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, as my uncle died on the Bataan death march, prior to their arrival at Camp Cabanatuan and Camp O'Donnel. My honey listened to the Filipno actors speak Tagalog, to see if their language was actually germaine to the movie, or just gibberish. She said everything they said was actually related to the movie. Maybe they figured they would have Filipinos watching, who would be listening to the language, so they figured they better do it right, and they did.
RE The Devil’s Brigade Movie of course it was Hollywooded but not bad for a Hollywood pic.
Pretty decent book

I think that The Raid was one of the best war pics ever. Firebase Gloria was really good for a low budget job. Last of the Mohicans was a good one.
One thing I learned from war films is that the German Army were incompetent bunglers who couldn’t whip a paper sack.
I want to see Battle of the River Plate again.
I should have said The Great Raid. One of my sister-in-law’s grandfathers took to the forest and was a guerilla through the war on Luzon. My brother said he still had his rifle hanging on pegs above his bedroom door with which he capped off several Japanese soldiers.
The former Sgt Major I used to work with said the same things about Iwo that you posted. It was hard to dig a fighting hole since the coarse sand would not stick together and stay dug. Ditto on heating up the rations.
Oh yessssssssssss... Hamburger Hill! Gotta be there. One of my favorites. It shows what our guys went thru as close to realistic as possible. I was thoroughly distressed after viewing it.
Same
Saving Private Ryan is a terrible film. I will never understand its appeal
While Band of Brothers, is great and under rated
I didn’t see The Longest Day or A Bridge Too Far. Blaspheme!
