On a recent bright spring morning, students admitted to the Barnard College Class of 2019 gathered on campus. As blue-and-white balloons fluttered in the breeze, the prospective freshmen attended panels and lunched on the lawn, chatting animatedly with current students.
There were, of course, young women from a variety of backgrounds, but at least one category wasnt included: transgender women. Barnard, like other womens colleges, has traditionally admitted only students born female. But that might be changing.
Next week, Barnards trustees are expected to vote on an issue that has arrived loudly and emphatically on the front burner for womens colleges across the nation: transgender admissions. One by one, schools have announced policies in the past year that address, as never before, the fluidity of gender.
Why the sudden action? I think certain issues just hit the zeitgeist at a certain point in time, says Debora Spar, Barnard's president, whos led a months-long effort to explore the issue with her community, including five town halls and a survey that yielded some 900 responsesall of which she says shes personally read. History is moving very quickly on this issue. Popular culture, too.

body dysmorphia, which in its extreme leads people to have legs or arms removed in south American countries, is a terrible illness.
why is removing genitalia legal here but not arms and legs?
I’ve heard that a lobotomy cures a lot of these problems.
When the sexual assault accusations begin to fly, who will Gloria Allred side with? The highest bidder I suppose...
Difficult choice, between frontal lobotomy and bottal infrontofme.
What do you bet they allow the circus to come to town, but they get no financial aid.
That is why many college and universities are working the foreign student angle. They get the body in the seat, but they pay full boat.
This is the $40,000 a year college that a poor, deprived girl from Hawaii went to. Her brother is now a famous politician.
DNA analysis would demonstrate these are unmistakably men. Discrimination lawsuits will follow, and it’s just a matter of time. Women’s colleges will be done for, with only women to blame.
My Bad! Thought is read “Barnhardt” and I shuddered!
Hang tough Anne!
After a quick read of the headline, I thought it said “Barnyard”, which would have been an entirely appropriate headline.
“So this is how Title IX dies...to thunderous applause.”
hmm I think I see the makings of a Vince Vaughn comedy here .
How bout they try admitting smart people? Wait....the public schools have eliminated the demographic. Never mind.
I don’t understand why anorexics who think they’re fat are rightly considered mentally ill, but people who think they belong to the opposite sex are to be taken seriously.
I also don’t understand why and when the interests of men in dresses became a feminist issue.
I remember when feminism was about getting an education and being able to get a loan or credit in your own name without a male co-signer, not this idiocy.
That’s what many guys at Columbia College called Barnard, for obvious reasons.
