Think you'll be getting a free upgrade to Windows 10 from your pirated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1? Not so fast.
For months, rumors have been swirling that suggested Microsoft was so eager to get its entire customer base onto Windows 10 that it will extend its free upgrade offer even to those who obtained their copies of Windows by, um, questionable means. Well, it seems that may not be true after all. Or not entirely true. Or something.
Microsoft operating systems exec veep Terry Myerson weighed in on Friday to clarify the software giant's position on "Non-Genuine" Windows installs although as clarity goes, his comments were hardly crystal.
"Non-Genuine Windows has a high risk of malware, fraud, public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions," Myserson said. "Non-Genuine Windows is not supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner."
Fair enough. So what about those free upgrades?
"While our free offer to upgrade to Windows 10 will not apply to Non-Genuine Windows devices, and as we've always done, we will continue to offer Windows 10 to customers running devices in a Non-Genuine state," said Myerson.
OK then. Microsoft will not be offering free upgrades to Windows 10 to customers who are running an older version of Windows that isn't properly licensed. That's plain enough, right? But hang on ...
"In addition, in partnership with some of our valued OEM partners, [sic] we are planning very attractive Windows 10 upgrade offers for their customers running one of their older devices in a Non-Genuine state," Myerson added. "Please stay tuned to learn more from our partners on the specifics of their offers."

The reinstall message should have given you a number to call. They should be able to unlock it for you. Note: when my son went through this, he repeated the code several times to the automated responder. After these failures, he cursed - something unusual for him. It immediately connected him to a live person. Your mileage may vary.
You can install the Windows 10 preview for free and then when the final release comes out it will update to that for free.
He was free to give away his.
I’m sure that Stallman belives that crooks are just misunderstood.
Oh please. You can get anything on the torrents. As a matter of fact, I actually don’t know of anyone who actually BOUGHT Adobe Photoshop.
Yup. Good ole torrents. I’ll bet Win 10 .exe will be on Kickass within the week of release.
Probably more code but a smaller memory footprint (less code in RAM at any given time). Boots and shuts down nice and quick, at least until you load in a million drivers and background tasks. Dunno about DRM, probably more. Control over hardware... eh, probably it's more restrictive, but that's a guess.
Caveat: Those comments are my opinions or guesses, not known facts.
I bet it is on the street corners of Shanghai right now for 5$.
Hell, that amount will barely suffice for an "About" dialog box these days.
Use telephone, be patient and call Microsoft
Stalman! That stalwart of conservatism, you mean? /s
How does Stalman pay for things? Are they simply given to him? He has no job or income?
Everything should be free—except his labor. THAT will cost you, no doubt.
“Type in this number as I read it and do not write it down.”
Post 4 is correct, and failing that, you could likely buy reinstall software from Dell for that PC.
Of course, we should make such from the image partition which is usually provided rather than the DVD installation media. By which you can usually reinstall the OD. Did you try that option (F10 during POST)? .
Stallman used to get academic grants....
Correct.
The so-called Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) used a real time operating system, which enabled astronauts to enter simple commands by typing in pairs of nouns and verbs, to control the spacecraft. It was more basic than the electronics in modern toasters that have computer controlled stop/start/defrost buttons. It had approximately 64Kbyte of memory and operated at 0.043MHz.-www.computerweekly.com/feature/Apollo-11-The-computers-that-put-man-on-the-moon
I recall that was not the case, but i am running WTP now, while W.8.1 is on another drive. But which was installed on another PC.
I just saw a Twitter post quoting Microsoft confirming it.
I’m running it on a brand new PC. It’s the only operating system it’s had. This new machine is massively overpowered and I’ll be converting my old one to a virtual machine running under Hyper-V.
I love windows 95
You do not want to know how big my first 40 MB hard drive was.............
