A 16-year-old Taiwanese foreign exchange student was gored by a bison as she posed for a picture in Yellowstone National Park Friday.
The girl suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. She was visiting Yellowstone with her host family.
They were hiking in a trail near the Old Faithful geyser in Wyoming when they stopped by a group of people who were watching bison grazing nearby.
"The girl turned her back to the bison to have her picture taken when the bison lifted its head, took a couple steps and gored her," the National Park Service said in a statement.
Park rangers rushed to help the girl and took her to the Old Faithful Clinic, where she was later airlifted for further treatment.
The National Park Service warns people must stay at least 25 yards away from large animals such as bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose and coyotes, and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.
The Taiwanese girl, whose name was not released, and her host family are reported to have been less than six feet away from the bison.
The park service warns that bison can sprint three times faster than humans can run and are unpredictable and dangerous.
"Your best view may be from inside a hard-sided vehicle," according to the park service. "Every year visitors are gored and some have been killed."
There are 2,300 to 5,000 bison in Yellowstone.
Hey, watch this!
Fewer than six feet, they are very lucky she was the only one gored, and very lucky that she’s alive.
That will be an interesting scar to explain, back in Taiwan.
Highpoint state park, highpoint nj.
“Take my picture with the bear!” -every stinking year.
Taiwan Beer.
That’s the name. Seems like the only beer in Taiwan.
Gan bei, baby.
At least the bison didn’t have time to get some speed up.
Off-topic, but I was recently looking at the ISO 3166-1 listing of two-letter country codes and noticed that TW is officially described as “Taiwan, Province of China”.
What happened to the Republic of China? When did the UN pukes knuckle under to the Chicoms?
Don’t forget the great auk of the Sahara. And the snow rattler of Ellesmere island.
1979. Same year that the US knuckled under.
China is a member of the Security Council.
Wow, that long ago? Thanks for the info. I know China’s position has been longstanding, but I had thought the West still supported Taiwan in such matters.
And they doubt Darwin.

Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw.
Had two big horns and a wooly jaw.
Wooly bully, wooly bully.
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.
Hatty told Matty, "Let's don't take no chance.
Let's not be*L-seven*, come and learn to dance."
Wooly bully, wooly bully
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.
Matty told Hatty, "That's the thing to do.
Get you someone really to pull the wool with you."
Wooly bully, wooly bully.
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.
*L7 = square
Six feet? Good grief, that’s Darwin Awards material. I and a friend stalked some wild bison to take photos in a South Dakota park. It was open grasslands with no trees to hide behind. The bison were watching us, so We decided 200 feet was close enough! As my friend joked, “I don’t have to run faster than those bison, I just have to run faster than you!”
Aaaaand there goes my sympathy.
