The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
The roses are coming in and look beautiful - just in time for Mother’s day last week so I cut several and placed them on the mantle with Mom’s photo. Everything is thriving and blooming or just about to. I received a new rose in the mail that I had ordered last fall - Lyda Rose. It can actually tolerate some shade so now I have to decide where I want to plant it. The other rose I had ordered (Kazanlik) was out of stock so I ordered one titled Just Joey.
I’ve only planted a few tomato plants and have several more to pot up. My time just keeps getting away from me. We’ve had a nice amount of rainfall (not too much, not too little). We filled all the holes the dog dug this past winter and seeded the lawn. The grass is coming right up. Looks so much better.
Good to hear from you. It’s all about the resting and eating right now, so save your strength for sure.
“Do nothing,”
The advice I like most to get!
Very possible (though it’s certainly some kind of tomato).
The shame is I had great success with my first heirloom Beefsteaks last year and saved the seeds... and then accidently threw them away.
Hoping to see some sprouting up from where last year’s tomatoes were, no luck so far.
You could prune it. Sometimes the tip of the tomato plant is damaged or broken off, and I guess that could cause it to be stunted.
If you take all except about 3 leaves off the branches you trim off and bury the nodules they will form roots at the nodules and you will have some additional plants to grow. I have also done this by putting the branch in water.
A lot of people like to trim off the “suckers” - little starts of branches in between two other branches.
Some causes for leafy tops and no roots:
Unseasonable weather for the variety planted
Extreme Crowding
Planting too late
Too much shade
That’s the extent of my knowledge on radishes.
PS. Doing nothing is a great option.
A soil test could clarify the mystery. You may be lacking in P or K or some micro nutrient.
NO!
An expert has told me what I wanted to hear, so that’s what I’m doing LOL!
Getting blooms on my snow peas... hope they’re as good as I’ve heard.
Stopped by the local Southern States and it was out of business.
Surpried to see the store close as it was only built and opened a few years ago.
Fellow there said to take what we wanted of the plants that remained so we got some types we usually don’t (rhubarb for one). Will see what happens.
Yes, it’s been a rainy week in Central Missouri. I started pumping the pond out again, and had just gotten it to the point that the pump was beginning to suck air, and what happened today? Toad strangler! Twice! lol
I did manage to get the rest of my tomato plants stuck in the dirt. Eggplants are in the dirt along with a dozen pepper plants. I still have 20 peppers in pots that need to be transplanted. Green beans are up. Sweet corn has spiked. One row of cucumbers are up and another one planted. Snap peas are blooming like crazy.
I’m off to a farm sale in the morning. I’m hoping to pick up a couple pieces of tillage equipment that I’ll be needing soon.
I have a long list of stuff for Saturday. In the morning, I’ll pick the 3 that are squealing the loudest, and do those, tell the rest to quit whining, and then relax before going to baby sit with the great grand kids.
Well, doing nothing is always my first choice too. LOL
Do you have a test kit you use and like?
We had some Iris for Mother’s day weekend here. A couple of the miniature roses are blooming this week. Several didn’t make it through the winter.
I noticed that you also posted you planted onions there. I would dig one up in a week and see what you have. If the bugs are still there I wouldn't plant anything there until late summer. Until then cover the ground with black plastic and let it cook in the sun all summer.
I grew up in NW Iowa. Sure wish I had some of the black dirt down here in SC!
we had one we picked up from Walmart, just due to convenience. It seemed to work ok. Didn’t really pay much attention to the name - so I don’t recall it.
One of the best deals for your money is to contact your extension agent for your county and get a really good one that way - depending on what you want. The extension agent can give you lots of tips for growing in your particular area- soil and climate etc.
The extension office also has lots of free info much of it is on the internet now. Just do a search for your state universities’ extension service.
I understand. There isn’t any better soil anywhere on the planet.
Ok, thanks. I’ve done that before to kill weeds off, but never for bugs.
Good idea, thanks. We have a UF extension just around the corner from us.
