Its been called the razor blade business model. A company sells a product like a battery-operated razor blade handle at a relatively low price in order to sell a complementary consumable product later, like the astoundingly costly Gillette Power Fusion Proglide cartridge, $18 for four blades, which then get thrown away.
But it could also be called the Keurig K-Cup business model. Once a consumer buys the coffee machine, the coffee drinker may spend as much as $50 to $60 per pound on the coffee contained in the K-Cups, considerably more than the cost of even Starbuckss breakfast blend, which goes for about $11.95 per pound.
Some years back, thousands of Keurig single-serve machine fans found a cheaper alternative, however refillable, non-disposable K-cups, little plastic coffee grounds holders, which the company graciously sold under the brand of My K-Cup.

The only thing new (or at least retried) is another company trying to protect their product via DRM. Can’t these folks ever learn?
No doubt. At a cost of $12/18 K-cups, I can fill my 14-ounce travel mug for 67 cents, it takes about 2 minutes to do it, and clean up is as simple as taking the used K-cup and walking it 3 feet to the trash can. I guess I’m just a dumb ole boy, cuz I’m pretty satisfied with this situation.
Apparently Keurig thought they were Star_ucks and screw the ir customers and they would keep coming back for more..............like Star_ucks!
It may be convenient for you, but it’s not for me. I’ve got two of them and never use them. One I used for about a week, the other I’ve never taken out of the box. For me, Keurig is the way to go. Everyone is different.
Chemex ftw
Bed, Bath, and Beyond has been carrying a product called Eco-fill 2.0 for almost as long as the Kuerig 2.0 has been out. Works like a charm. I use any ground coffee I want.
I’m not dissing Keurig cause I would like to own one but my finances won’t let me indulge in buying one. If the personal Keurig drops under $40...I’d snap it up quick!
What is the best cheap razor blade?
Yep. Never a K whatever. Never will.
Sorry but they deserve it for trying the DRM trick! If you think that is just business then you are the problem!
I like Keurigs. No wait for the coffee to brew (really), lots of flavors to choose from and the coffee is superior to regular coffee makers that I’ve tasted other than some Bunn’s coffee makers.main drawback is the cost per cup tho.
And, generally, that was the market response to the Keurig new technology.
Yup!
You like many others are missing the point!
Do you really want your coffee makers to protect their product to the point of making you buy coffee from only them?
The free market has to rule here or you will be paying through the nose for almost everything - and it is getting more like that everyday.
Or a s a lib would say...
But but it not faaaaaair she didn’t know. It’s yourrrrrrrrrrrrr fault you don’t tell her beforeeee she bought the machine.
So true... but of course progressives would never allow competition in the first place so this would never happen.
They would still argue as you stated that if they just did not know the consequences, let them of the hook or in the progressive terms, free...
Personna Hospital Grade double edge
~$0.30
Yes, I agree! Why hasn’t that worked faster with the entertainment industry, mainly the musical section and their DRM? Their have been so many problems with their products that you would think that they would come up with a viable system but...money still seems to be an obstacle to them - they want more (and it seems to only cost them)...
