CHINA's famous terracotta army is about to be reinforced: Fresh excavations on a burial pit in the ancient capital, Xi'an are expected to uncover 1500 more of the live-sized clay figurines.
The excavation, which began last Thursday, is centred upon a 200sq/m patch of the 56sq/km underground mausoleum of China's first emperor, Emperor Qinshihuang, who reigned in 221BC.
Archaeologist Yuan Zhongyi told media that he anticipated the burial pit would contain 1400 more terracotta warriors and archers, along with about 90 horse-drawn chariots.
Progress has so far been promising, he said.: "Their colourful paint is also relatively well preserved."
The excavation site, known as "Pit No. 2", has previously produced several particularly fine specimines -- including one with a distinctive green-coloured face.
The number of clay figurines expected to be uncovered is based on the positioning and density of previous discoveries in the area.
Previous excavations at the Shaaxi Province site uncovered more than 7000 warriors and horses since 1974.

Maybe somebody should check around back and see if the ChiComs have a little factory where they make these things....
There’s probably ruins of one near the site, along with a pile of bones of those who died on the job, along with the “1 Day Since Last Worksite Accident” sign.
Bet you can buy some on ebay for cheap.
If they have not already done so, someone should do satellite infra red scan of the whole area.
This is pretty danged neat. I’ve seen the terra-cotta soldiers in person. It’s a downright eerie experience. You’d swear they’re going to come to life at any moment.
ChiComs have a little factory where they make these things....
Maybe they outsource to ? India, Mexico, Bangladesh ...
:’)
Did they confuse hectares with square kilometers?
56 sq KM is 21 sq miles of mausoleum; 56 hectares is 138 acres.
Mausoleum of QinshihuangIn 246 BC, after Qin Shihuang (means "the first emperor of the state of Qin" in Chinese) ascended the throne of Qin ( a state in that period), he ordered to build his final resting palace. This authoritative emperor left behind the world with great achievement and mysterious royal mausoleum as well. The construction lasted 38 years, confiscating over 720000 corvees and prisoners. Modern surveys of the site show that the mausoleum is indeed divided into an inner sanctuary and outer city. According to historical record, the mausoleum originally has 250000 sq. meters built-up area at the bottom and 115m high. Unfortunately, because of erosion and man-made breach, the mausoleum currently remains 120000 sq. meters at the bottom and 87 meters high. Around the mausoleum, there are lots of accompanying tombs, which consist of 56.25 sq. km tomb area. In addition to the discovered Terracotta Warriors and Bronze Horses, there are more vaults containing other relics being discovered recently. As time goes by, it's bound to discover more relics. Mausoleum of Qin Shihuang boasts a Chinese history museum, therefore, it's well-known to the outside world.
