The sun produced its biggest solar flare so far this year, a huge blast that caused temporary radio blackouts throughout the Pacific.
The X-class solar flare - considered the most powerful category of sun storm - erupted Tuesday from a sunspot called Active Region 2339 (AR2339), peaking at 6:11 p.m. EDT (2211 GMT), according to Space.com.
The blast, however, is unlikely to cause major problems back on Earth.
"Given the impulsive nature of this event, as well as the source location on the eastern limb of the sun, we are not expecting a radiation storm at Earth," scientists with the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Boulder, Colorado, which is overseen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, wrote Tuesday evening.

Where?
Just the other day, I saw an article here saying that this is the most “spot-free” sun surface we’ve seen in over 50 years, indicating lack of this kind of activity.
I really don’t think anyone knows what they’re talking about anymore.

Coming up at the top of the hour: will this affect supplies of organic Vaseline in Sylmar?

I welcome the 1850s!
From what I can gather, when the sun is peaking and bottoming out in activity, the sun is rather stable and doesn’t release much solar flare. When the numbers of sunspots are increasing and decreasing, the magnetic variance of the sun is in a flux and thus is much more likely to emit solar flares. The sun is in a decreasing trend right now.
“...the eastern limb of the sun..”
“Eastern” relative to what?
must be due to global warming
Yep. I saw it too. I had the same thought. I think the sun is dying. We likely only have a few milenia left. We should seek a new planet asap.
Relative to the center of course. Duh! (giggles)
This is truly terrifying news. I can’t decide whether to:
A) Become frozen in fear, unable to move or even blink; or
B) Go in to a blind panic and begin running around in circles at full speed shouting ‘NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO’ at the top of my lungs until I knock myself unconscious by crashing in to a wall or door jamb.
I guess I’ll mull it over a little longer.
Yes. That must be it.
Or, it may be George Bush’s fault...
...or both.
