Like many publications, Playboy magazine interviews many celebrities, but whats interesting is the titles habit of asking them if they own guns. Bill Maher, the comedian who hosts Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO, has said before that he has guns. In the May issue of Playboy, the editors asked him why.
Maher told Playboy he has two guns. Theyre for protection. We live in a gun country, even Los Angeles. Im not expecting anything to happen, but I want to be ready for it. So I have a lot of security measures at my house. If somebody gets into my bedroom, wow, they really did a lot to get there. They got past gates, bodyguards, dogs. If I have to shoot somebody in my bedroom, that was a commando raid on par with the SEALs getting Bin Laden. My gun is my last line of defense.
Playboys response: Its strange to think of you as a gun lover.
Maher said, I do not love my gun. Thats the problem with these Second Amendment people. They love guns. For them, its not just that guns should be available; its that theyre seen as awesome. They go into Chipotle with their rifles. They go on dates with their guns. They take selfies with their guns. They teach their kids to kill with them. They give them as gifts. Its a sickness.
Before discussing guns, Maher also told Playboy that Im pro the truth. And some peoples feathers get ruffled more than others by the truth. So Id like to ask Maher, as a fellow gun owner, to meet people at gun ranges and those who lawfully carry concealed, and as he gets to know them, to ask himself if these gun owners really have a sickness.
they didnt point out to him average folks cannot afford 24/7 bodyguards, or expensive complicated alarm systems.
It is very common to have affection for your vehicle. It’s an extension of yourself/personality for a lot of people. Part of their identity. I know its like that for me especially because I hold, onto them for a long time and take care of them.
that’s awesome. I had a z29 black/leather convertible. I LOVED seeing that car on the driveway when I got home from work when I was a young man :) What do you like in th way of cars? :)
Remember, I’m from state island lol.
I would think people who love their guns take extra care of them compared to mopes like Bill.
I don’t own one. I live in NYCUSSR
Billy Boy is simply a prick extraordinare. Anything he says should not only be ignored but openly laughed at.
Too many mall ninjas walking around in 5.11 gear arguing about which obscure round is better than the other. Too many good 'ol boys talking about their collection like it was the second coming. Too much affinity for what is ostensibly a tool. I found it boring and cult-like.
YMMV.
I have a 65 AC 427 Cobra (Factory Five) that I built - every nut, bolt, rivet, tore down a Mustang for drive train, etc. I LOVE that car. Could be a weapon! I must be sick! I can’t afford a fancy security system, had to get one from Smith and Wesson (actually abour 40 of them).
At one time, I owned guns for hunting and recreation. Now that I’m older, I own them because I don’t know who the “good guys” are anymore.
Sounds awesome!!!! Would love to see a pic some time.
by 40, do you mean... lol!! NYC slicker here. VERY pro 2nd amendment but live in the Soviet Socialist Republic of CuomoStan
Decades ago, I was threatened by union thugs who told me to obey or they would break my arms. They were bigger and stronger than me, and they outnumbered me. I obeyed even though the union thugs were in the wrong. I hated that.
A few years later, I was attacked by street thugs who injured me to try to take my property from me. At that point, I was well-trained in unarmed combat. Even though they outnumbered me, they got hurt far worse than I did. I still got hurt though. I hated that.
Today I own firearms and make sure they are always accessible where legal, including but not limited to my home. That means any thugs who want to hurt me are betting their lives on the outcome. I love that.
hes an ugly little douchebag with no importance other than in his own head.
Until God sends the right man or the right dog, I’m taking care of myself with the little machine that puts me on equal terms with a bad guy twice my size and twenty times my strength.
I’d call it friendship rather than love. You have a friend in PA: your gun!
Proud to say that I have this “sickness”.
His rhetoric is simple and shallow, but the usual gaggle of Ned Flanders conservatives or libertarians go on his show and tailgate his conversations instead of politically disqualifying his idiocy.
Wow, when a liberal has serious personal/mental health issues, they will tell you one way or another. In this case, projection is both blatant and disturbing.
Well, that one's a lie.
His "Politically Incorrect" show was anything but.
Maher is a typical foolish liberal, consumed by and subservient to a liberal orthodoxy and dogma that permits no challenges and denounces truth as irrelevant. It's a wonder that he hasn't broken an arm or two due to constantly patting himself on the back for how smart and wise he is.
That's not sickness, just the way it is. Guns are awesome.
> You must sleep with them and cuddle them and marry them.
I slept with my rifle when I was in Vietnam. Good thing, too. I woke up to a lot of noise once and had to shoot from my bunk, the guy standing in the barracks doorway about to fire a rocket launcher. I keep my weapons handy, but I haven’t slept with them since leaving the warzone.
A gun is what one owns to preserve life and freedom.
There are those who would deprive you of these treasures and they will start with your guns.

Where does Bill Maher the atheist get off assuming some sort of transcendent standard of proper and improper cognitive functioning of human beings? In his worldview human beings are the product of blind, purposeless evolutionary forces, and beliefs and affections are the result of electrical impulses in the brain.
So how does he account for his notion than there is something "wrong" with or "unhealthy" about gun lovers' cognitive abilities and affections? In his naturalistic worldview how is it even possible for there to be a deficiency, flaw or intellectual dysfunction, or to deviate from some "correct", "right "or "natural" condition? In other words, sickness compared to what? More electrical impulses in other brains? How is it even possible in his world view to deviate from a natural condition in some "improper" way?
