Honda says its cars won’t crash after 2040

Taking a page out of Volvo’s playbook, Honda has set a handful of lofty goals for the next 35 years – including eliminating the possibility of its cars crashing.

Speaking to Car and Driver last week at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress, Honda Americas R&D president Frank Paluch dished detains on a new set of core goals the Japanese automaker hopes to achieve by 2040, but they won’t be happening all at once.

The first step in Honda’s goal will come in 2020, where Paluch says Honda vehicles will be connected one another and to infrastructure, lending to a 50 per cent reduction in collisions involving Honda vehicles.

A decade later in 2030, Honda predicts all road users – cyclists, drivers, pedestrians, motorcycles and, of course, cars – will be virtually connected. This means Honda will be set up to completely eliminate the prospects of collisions in its vehicles by 2040, lending to a number of ideas for more efficient travel on the road – high-speed express lanes reserved for connected cars are just the tip of the iceberg.

“..cars that won’t crash..”

I seem to remember there was a ship that would not sink somewhere in the past.

The fully automated system will crash less than the old individually human-steered system. Since it will be safer, it will become mandatory. Steering wheels will be outlawed.

But not to worry, It's for your own good. And personal freedom and autonomy are probably racist values anyhow.

That’s what Microsoft promises about Windows 2040 as well.

We can’t even get unlicensed drivers off the road. I’ll bet my 1994 Eddie Bauer Bronco against the Honda any day of the week.

More fragile infrastructure—just what we need. Wilderness areas that were once private, rural lands, will be quiet indeed, and low-techs will have made a science of living on them unmolested.

It will be 46 years old in 2040. We’re talking about the future. Not now.

I can see this happening in heavily populated, especially leftist oriented states.

But what about rural states, places described as out in the middle of nowhere? Where gravel roads and dirt trails are abundant? Places where self sufficiency means freedom. A place where an ATV, a horse, or even a John Deere tractor is a means of transportation?

The lefties continual efforts to limit freedom makes having a bad car crash look good.

It’ll still be running in 2040, thanks for asking. Only have two mission kills, but when I’m 75 I hope to get a lot more.
