A lawyer for the man who shot President Ronald Reagan has told a court his client should be permanently released from his mental health hospital.
John Hinckley Jr shot the president, who survived, and three others outside the Hilton Hotel in Washington in 1981.
Mr Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity but was sent for treatment to a Washington hospital. Currently, he spends 17 days per month at his mother's home in the nearby state of Virginia.
Mr Hinckley's lawyer, Barry Levine, told a federal court on Wednesday that the would-be assassin is "clinically ready" to leave St Elizabeth's Hospital permanently because he has been in "full and stable remission" for more than two decades.
The lawyer is asking a judge to grant his client "convalescent leave", which would allow him to live outside the hospital with regular visits to mental health professionals.
But Prosecutor Colleen Kennedy disagreed and said more restrictions and conditions are necessary to keep Mr Hinckley and others safe.
His mother is 89 years old and lives near Williamsburg, Virginia.
While living with her, he is allowed to live a normal life that includes unsupervised shopping and dining out, and occasional contact with the US Secret Service.
Mr Reagan was just 69 days into his presidency when the attempt was made on his life.

Heck, I’d like to live outside a mental hospital, but I’m stuck living in this crazy insane asylum called America.
And the lunatics are in charge.
Wonder how he felt after he found out that Jodie Foster played for the other team?
“While living with her, he is allowed to live a normal life that includes unsupervised shopping and dining out, and occasional contact with the US Secret Service.”
All so normal for all Americans to have occasional contact with the Secret Service.
Since he shot a conservative Republican, I’m waiting for Obozo to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
[[John Hinckley requests to live outside mental hospital]]
But it;’s much warmer inside, but if he insists, I say ok- just chain him to the side of the mental institution and give him a tarp to cover up with for when it rains
Jodie Foster...please pick up the courtesy phone.
Yeah. Bush’s fault.
John Hinckley’s mother has got to be about 87 years old by now. I believe they are working on what to do when she passes. He may end of back at the hospital. His siblings have not so far elected to invite him to their homes.
Of course, those days are long gone. Now, DC is one big spider hole. Look at what happened to Miriam Carey. And we have people screaming that the gyrocopter guy should’ve been shot down.
America. It was nice while it lasted.
President Reagan was nearly fatally wounded but his response to Nancy: “Sorry Honey, I guess I forgot to duck.” What a guy.
I KNOW it’s insane lol. But I’ve always been slightly gullible and my sister is worse. She reads infowars and thinks the end of days is every day lol
And he did say he wouldn’t raise taxes lol
Can we forget I ever posted that. I’ll give you 10 bucks
My favorite was when they were about to operate and he said to the surgeons, "I hope you're all good Republicans!"
After a finding of NGRI, treatment is just that--treatment. It is not meant to be punishment or penal confinement. The NG part of NGRI means "not guilty" after all. The Supreme Court has ruled long ago that whatever the reason for confining someone, it must not be for longer than necessary to accomplish its stated purpose.
I know the emotional reaction and frankly don't personally care if he is not released. But under the law, and given the information available, he should be.
Yeah, as long as Jodie Foster is alive, this seems like a bad idea.
Bush’s prior boss was also killed...what are the odds?
