Apple Watch: An Overnight Multi-Billion Dollar Business
Carl Howe blog ^ | Posted on April 16, 2015 | By Carl Howe

It was just three years in the making

Quick look

Here’s the quick summary for those of you who don’t have time to read the next 3,000 words.

The Apple Watch went on sale for pre-orders on April 10, 2015, and the Apple Store tells us that delivery dates for all orders now stretch into summer and beyond. We know that the initial production run of Apple Watch has sold out; what we don’t know is how many Apple Watches that represents. I’ve built a simple model that predicts that the initial run of watches was more than 3 million units and will yield Apple Watch revenues of over $2 billion for the first two weeks of sales. While this figure is smaller than first weekend sales of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, it dwarfs all other smartwatch sales to date and represents a milestone in wearable sales. The model suggests that while Sport Watch will lead sales in volume, selling 1.8 million units through May 8, Apple Watch will actually lead in revenue during that period, garnering about $900 million versus Sport’s $675 million. I also believe that Apple’s decision to introduce the Edition will be validated by $500 million in sales on only 40,000 units.

Putting popcorn in the microwave now while waiting the arrival of the gang of deranged Apple haters who will feel compelled to come comment on this thread. Bizarre behavior from otherwise normal folk.

Pretty good business practice to create a product that has instant demand and then meet that demand.

The Apple Watch is not for me. But I don’t gainsay Apple’s success.

I still think unlike the iPhone and even the iPad, the Apple Watch will be a relatively low-volume business for Apple because it’s such a new category of hardware and nobody knows how to figure out its real usefulness yet.

I agree. I also think that the display is too small. It may end up changing to something more rectangular and larger in the future.

Putting popcorn in the microwave

Personally, I can't wait for the iMicrowave to come out. It'll cost $5K and will measure my heart-rate. Too bad it has to be recharged after each minute of use... but it comes from Apple so it's all worth it.

nobody knows how to figure out its real usefulness yet.

The whole thing with having to have a cellphone to make it work seems to cripple the usefulness, other than not having to pull the phone out for some things.

Not having ever used a smartphone for anything, I have no idea what those things might be. I was very interested in tablets/ipad until I found you needed a smartphone and data connection/subscription to do most things with them. Those things are not worth $100/mo to me.

I think those are the same people who keep saying that Tim Tebow will never be an NFL quarterback.

That’s not true at all.

Not true. I just replaced my first generation iPad and went with just the wireless model. There is no need for a smartphone either.

I use the iPad with wireless keyboard when traveling. Tired of lugging the computer around and the hassles of TSA.

I honestly don't see the value of the watch yet. I'm happy with my Casio Pathfinder for EDC. If there is something beyond what the Casio has, I have no problem going with two watches.

I didn’t buy the Casio watch, why buy this?

not to mention, who needs a watch these days?

I’m sure the fanboys will be all over it, they’re fad driven and will hop on anything deemed ‘worthy’ by those in the media paid to say as much.
