nobody knows how to figure out its real usefulness yet. The whole thing with having to have a cellphone to make it work seems to cripple the usefulness, other than not having to pull the phone out for some things.
Not having ever used a smartphone for anything, I have no idea what those things might be. I was very interested in tablets/ipad until I found you needed a smartphone and data connection/subscription to do most things with them. Those things are not worth $100/mo to me.

That’s not true at all.

Not true. I just replaced my first generation iPad and went with just the wireless model. There is no need for a smartphone either.
I use the iPad with wireless keyboard when traveling. Tired of lugging the computer around and the hassles of TSA.
I honestly don't see the value of the watch yet. I'm happy with my Casio Pathfinder for EDC. If there is something beyond what the Casio has, I have no problem going with two watches.

An iPad and in fact most tablets, are fully functional with a WIFI connection. They never require a smartphone to function. An iPad can be had with a cellular connection which allows it the freedom to connect to the Internet without a WIFI connection. . . and there were some Android tablets that also had cellular connectivity as well for the same purpose.
My personal iPad has the LTE cellular connectivity because I often use it away from a WIFI connection. Because I have a smartphone, service for it costs me an additional $10 per month on my plan.

The new funny baseball caps make more sense than wasting money on a watch that does the same thing as the phone that I by the way will need to carry or the watch won't work.

The people buying these things are metrosexual types or just really love anything Apple puts out.
