My son is graduating from college! Worked his way through on his own! As a gift, I am taking him to NYC. Staying with my sister in Queens.
I want to do just ONE thing that is extra special- like to a taping of the The Tonight Show?
Any ideas, suggestions?
We will be going to see Statue of Liberty, Coney Island, Central Park, etc... But I am looking for one thing that will stand out for a young man graduating college-- no girlie clubs! MOM is on this trip!
Seriously?? A SUGGESTED DONATION???? I can hardly believe that.
A ball game is a must. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is something you will never forget.
Take him to Chinatown for a meal. Once you taste the food there, you’ll never find any restaurants like them anywhere else. (Except maybe China) If you like Italian food go to Brooklyn to L&B, try their spumoni, again, you won’t find anything like it anywhere else in the country. The restaurant is still Italian owned and their Pizza is the real deal. Its the spumoni that will bring you back.
Splurge and take him to the Metropolitan Opera - it’s still on. It’s worth it to see the enormous theater, the glittering crowd, the chandeliers rising while the lights go down. Buy him a glass of champagne during one of the long intermissions. If you’re lucky and the weather is nice, get there early to see the beautiful fountain. Don’t miss the Cezannes.
Otherwise, like others, I’d suggest a baseball game. Have fun. Don’t walk three abreast on the sidewalks. Don’t talk to beggars or homeless types and don’t get near the yellow line on the subway platform.

The museums with suggested donations are on city-owned land. Under their lease with the city, they cannot “charge admission,” but can and do suggest that visitors donate.
They don't need my puny dollars with their billions in endowments. I spend money in the gift shop anyway.
see The Book of Mormon....
“woodbutcher1963 @ post #3 gives a really good list of attractions for a short trip to NYC, confirming #2s Yankee Stadium suggestion NOTE: when/if you go to the Met or MOMA (make it the Met a between the two, IMO) you do NOT have to pay $25/person. That is suggested donation but not mandatory.”
The Met yes, MOMA no. MOMA’s admission is mandatory, not suggested. As you said, though, the Met is the better of the two anyway.
Bagels. My personal favorite is Ess-A-Bagel. Do not eat bagels anywhere but in a real, true deli - get a Zagat’s shopping guide.
Dirty water hot dogs are great - don’t eat the grilled ones. The water may be dirty but the grills are disgusting. Yes, mustard is a must as is sauerkraut. If you buy a knish, slice it and apply mustard. Katz’s has good ones. In fact, GO TO Katz’s and Russ and Daughters.
If you like Indian food, try 6th Street. Although they are disappearing, those restaurants are fun and cheap and really good.
I know I’m posting to you, lowbridge, but I figure evil will read them all.
The Book of Mormon is NOT family fare. In fact, it’s a piece of crap.
Do On the Town or a more classic musical. Better yet, see a straight play.
My Dad took me with him on a business trip to NYC when I was 11.He took me to a Red Sox/Yankees game..nosebleed seats,3rd base side.At 11 I knew nothing about the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry and,as a result, couldn't understand the dirty looks I was getting while cheering for the Sox.
Sweet memories...
When I lived there, I went time and again to Radio City Music Hall, which means you also can take in Rockefeller Center too.
Do have a corned beef sandwich at Carnegie Deli, close to 55th and 7th Ave.
While you are in Queens, you visit the site of the 64 World's Fair, I spend a fair amount of time at it.
That.
It's free and the ceiling is awesome. Make sure to find the whispering arches/room or whatever it's called. You whisper into one end and your son can hear you at the other.
The Warriors made it home.

I’ll tell you what is a great day trip, if you have the time.
Hop on the MTA North train towards Poughkeepsie. It is considered one of the top train rides in the world. Leaving Grand Central or Harlem sit on the left side of the train, it is a spectacular ride.
Get off at Garrison. Call ahead and have a cab waiting and go spend some time at the United States Military Academy at West Point. So much history with spectacular scenery. Can’t be beat.
Train is about an hour each way. Spend at least 4-5 hours at The Point.
While at Grand Central Station, you must walk through the public library building across the street. Last time I was there, they had an Automat exhibit.
Go to the top of 30 Rock on a clear day. A spectacular view of the city. Better than the Empire State building.
