She'd ask me what I wanted the upcoming week... I'd pick a few things, and she'd map out how to cook those and plan what to do with leftovers. We never "skimped" really, just planned on what to eat. She went to the store and bought only what she needed to cook her planned meals for the week.
The wife loved it. She likes to cook, and by knowing what she was making, she could focus on preparation without having to wonder what to make or whether she had what she needed.
Our food spending was cut in half. I'd recommend menu planning for anyone, not just people on a budget. It just makes sense.

A teenage girl in front of me at the grocery bought 2 candy bars and paid with a card, then got back over $8 change then said to her friend she now had money to go to the mall.
I asked the cashier if that had been an EBT card who replied 'yes and a purchase under $10 you get the change back in cash.....Why?

If this CEO is so concerned, why are they not hiring everyone who walks in the door?
First of all they are not living off $4 a day.You have consider your overall cost of living. For Welfarlers you have to include housing, medical, insurance, education, as well as bureaucrats, and pandering politician’s salaries. Its costing WAY more than $4 a day!
If it only cost $4 a day it wouldn’t be that big of an issue.
Second, ITS NOT THEIR MONEY. Its money the g’mint confiscated from hard working citizens who have to feed their own families.
Third, reliefers they have all day to go food shopping, to find bargains, because they are not working and have lots of spare time on their hands!
Otherwise, spring through fall, when the produce markets are cranking, you can find all kind of inexpensive healthy food.
But why should i be forced to buy someone else’s food who is otherwise capable of earning their own money to buy their own food???
Just for grins, I dropped $4.00 into the Inflation Calculator. That amount would have been 22 cents per day in 1933. I think if you asked any of our parents, grandparents, or relatives who grew up during the depression years they would agree that 22 cents was much more than they spent each day to feed a family, much less one person.
Not only that but cut out all EBT for fast food.
The only fast food would be food prepared at the community pantries for people that don’t have a way to cook and you eat what is being served for that day.
Amazing how many people can be fed with a few turkeys turned into turkey and dumplings with a side order of veggies.
The responsible are being enslaved by the irresponsible in our society.
We’re going to reach a point one day, where the productive just walk away from their work. That day is getting closer all the time.

I have a cousin who is 66 and recently divorced. She was left with nothing and signed up for food stamps. She said she’s eating better than she ever has. This is the first time she hasn’t had to pay for her own food.
The word for "vegetarian" in Greek is "hortofagos", which literally translates to "weed eater". Yes, very funny, but I kid you not.

I hate going out to eat. It is NEVER as good as what my wife serves up on just any old regular day... never mind what I get on special events.
I still take my wife out about once a week, because she enjoys a change of pace. I generally order a hamburger steak, because it's pretty hard for anyone to screw that up. My wife can cook a New York strip that is far better than what a restaurant could ever serve up, unless it's some place like Ruth's Chris... but that is a once a year trip on our anniversary. And we buy the discounted gift certificates at Costco before going. LOL
That is a good idea. I bulk purchase from BJ’s. I typically go in every couple months and spend 600 bucks but have everything I need for my family of 6 for awhile except bread and milk, but everything else I have plenty of until next BJ run. I have had to start buying 3 gallons of milk a week....3 teenage boys and a little girl can go through milk like nobody’s business. Sometimes I am hoping that the 3 gallons last. Crazy!!!!! But I am glad they are all healthy....sadly my oldest just turned 17 so he will be a senior in September....Yieks! The whole college thing is different then when my wife and I attended. It just seems larger then life. The dorms today are like multimillion dollars homes.....lol....just a little exaggerated.
It doesn’t even have to be bad tasting, really. A bottle of hot sauce is cheap and can liven up a plain beans and rice dish.
Red beans and rice - throw in a ham hock and a few bay leaves in with the beans while they cook (preferably all day). Splash on the hot sauce of your choice. That’s decent cheap eating. Plain, but good po’ folks food. I was raised on that.
This is making the rounds on Social Media with the usual suspects. I don’t feel like arguing today, but I eat nutritionally on less than four dollars all the time. The problem is that they don’t want to hear what your food choices are and what you have to do. Apparently soaking beans is beyond herculean and anything frozen, even if you did it yourself, amounts to a human rights abuse.
Split peas, lentils, eggs, cabbages, pork shoulders, carrots, cabbages (even better fermented-heh), adult wash yourself spinach, bananas and a few other things are fairly inexpensive.
It gets really fun when you explain that you buy the larger milk size (cheaper), turn half of it into yogurt in the comfort of your own kitchen. You wind up with double the yogurt at one third the cost. Of course it isn’t fat free (insert flavor here) Greek but it’s still good.
I also notice that when I am eating these foods regularly and not going out, my body wants less food overall.
2 big cans of $2 ravioli?
Yesterday hubby cooked the last of our half ham I bought for Easter. Threw it in a pot with some white beans. Ham and Muthas! With some cornbread....yum.
