One CEO tests how healthy low-income families can eat under the U.S. governments food assistance program.

Seeing as this is for the children, note that they receive FREE meals (3) in school.
Perhaps NYC is overpriced? Here in the western suburbs of chiraq, veggies are plentiful and cheap. 5 lb fresh carrots $3.45, fresh green beans $.79/lb...
When did the definition of “subsidized” change from helping to pay for food to completely paying someone’s food bill? If someone can’t eat on $4.00 per day then get a freaking job. The world doesn’t owe you a living.
Didn’t we just see this with Gwynyth Paltrow?
For breakfast I have a bowl of organic thick rolled oats. It costs $1 a pound and a bag lasts me several weeks.
Next question.
Yes, and she’s being utterly ridiculed on Twitter. LOL!
SNAP is Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. What part of 'supplemental' is unclear? It's not supposed to be the sole source of money for meals.
Easy. 10 packs of Ramen soup and a bag of carrots.
Easy. 10 packs of Ramen soup and a bag of carrots.
Who in the world thinks that's workable?
If we got rid of the minimum wage, people could work an 8 hr day and earn, what? $8? $16 $24? Plenty of money for food then.
There is the key word.
If it were up to me, EBT would be a 50 lbs Bag of Red Beans and Rice, Bricks of Government Cheese and a Big Box of Powered Milk.
There, you have been fed by the tax payer, want more? You must get it yourself.
Then they use the average (I don’t know if they are using the mean or the median) which presumes some other income 30% of which, by government formula, is assumed to be spent on food. A more accurate example would be to live on the maximum food stamp amount given to someone with no income.
It will not be gourmet food but 4 dollars a day will give you quite sufficient and nutritious food.
Rice and Beans = all the calories you need and protein in the beans. Also very cheap.
Eggs = $2.50 a dozen.
What ever fresh veggies are on sale.
Also take a multi-vitamine a day.
I buy fish for 3 dollars a pound.
Chicken can be bought for a dollar a pound.
Pork can be bought for 2 to 3 dollars a pound.
You will not be eating steak.
Ya, get some CEO to tell the poor how cheap they can eat...
Gezzz
You can feed a family of 5 on 31 bucks a week...
Gak
Looking sharp America
Big lie in the premise. Most people on SNAP work other programs such as food banks and soup kitchens. Around here there are young adult women who’s “job” is to collect as much free food as possible. They even drag kids along that aren’t theirs. There are food swap meets among these people where they barter a can of Campbell’s for a can of beans etc.
It would be easier to eat healthy on $4 a day than to eat unhealthy.
I lived on potato /egg hash in college. In 1980 it cost about $.20 a serving. Lived on 50/mon for everything including meals.
Yes. See my http://abuckaplate.blogspot.com/
Yup, the only problem I see is the cardboard collectors stealing the persons home each day when they go to work.
Yep. It’s not fun, but it can be done. If you want your meals to be fun, get a job, start a business, rob a bank - but show some freaking INDUSTRY for crying out loud. DO something. Produce something. Or live on bad tasting, but healthy food.
