The video appears to be damning: a white police officer fatally shooting a black man in the back as he ran away.
The shooting of Walter Scott by North Charleston, S.C., police Officer Thomas Stager has generated national outrage. Stager has been fired and charged with murder.
Legal and police tactics experts said the video would be powerful evidence in the criminal case. But they say it still leaves Stager’s defense with options.
One likely defense focus will be what is not on the video. The interaction between Scott and Stager before the shooting is not seen, nor is the traffic stop that began the incident. Defense attorneys will probably push on this, the experts said, telling jurors that the video doesn’t tell the whole story.
“What was the conversation and interaction between the officer and the subject?” said retired Los Angeles police Capt. Greg Meyer. “Why did the subject run away?”

There is NO possible ‘more to the story’ that could justify shooting someone in the back as they are running away from you.
He even pauses and shoots twice more after the guy is clearly hit.
The ONLY thing I hope is that this was NOT a good cop who had a momentary lapse of judgement. If he’s one of those a$$hole gestapo types then I hope he gets what is coming to him.
The fact that he drops a taser next to the body makes me thing it is the latter.
They would but in a time of war you allow those things.
I wonder if the cop is ex-military. Was he trained to eliminate any possible threat as a soldier or are they training cops this way now?
Maybe rubber bullets or a bean bag gun would have been a better next choice. Or maybe the cop could have tossed his nightstick. Or maybe we’ve found a genuine racist cop?
Right! No possibility that there is a child in the yard that the guy is running toward, no possibility that he had a knife, no...wait, you have seen it all and have decided.
I agree 100%. Having grown up in the days of the old black and white TV westerns, one thing I learned is that nothing justifies shooting somebody in the back. The “good guys” just don’t do that.

F the cop, F the dead guy, F the whole city and especially F the MFers who wrote this F-ing article. Yes, you can see he does not have a weapon in the video. You can also see the cop coldly shoot him eight times in the back, and then casually walk over and plant a weapon on the victim.
CASE CLOSED.

Read the article, the cops seem to be saying yes, you can see in the video that it was right to charge the cop with murder.
We are in a time of war. While the ROE have changed they are currently very restrictive. Can’t shoot unless shot at type of restrictions.
The suspect/victim appears to have been fleeing and unarmed. Unless those alleged facts are in contention, I am having a hard time seeing how what might, or might not have occurred before this has any bearing on the issue.
If he dropped a weapon then he didnt have it.
He was running away, his hands are in plain view.
Anyone could be running for a weapon at any time. Should everyone be shot?

The cop’s initial testimony (before the video came out) has already been made public. He claimed that he had to shoot the victim because the victim had his taser and the cop was in fear for his life, so he shot in self-defense.
What the video shows is that the cop is lying: his life was not in danger, the victim did not have a weapon, and the cop murdered him.
I believe that was cuffing the man to make sure he did not roll over and start shooting with that “no weapon”.
You want civilian union cops shooting people in the back for running away from a traffic stop?
How about what appears to be the planting of a weapon?
That guy would have died in the same way — if he’d been white.
Nothing would have changed.
Lets say he has a grenade in his pocket and, just out of frame, are some school children he is running towards.
Lets say he has a unseen knife and told the cop he is going to stab his girlfriend, who is just out of frame.
Well then what we saw on the video would make perfect sense. Justified shooting.
Now I know thats not likely but it makes no difference. The media has already convicted him and any other facts related will not matter.
Or more likely we have a cop who has been trained that its ok to shoot in this situations.
