As he returns to run the NBC News Group, Andy Lack faces one of the same puzzles he tried to solve a decade and a half ago: how to make MSNBC work.
While he was gone, MSNBC changed from traditional news to a political network with a liberal lens. Now that it is mired in a ratings slump, Lacks mandate as chairman will be figuring out if MSNBC needs a complete overhaul or a sharpening of its mission.
The current picture is seriously ugly. Through early March, Chris Hayes viewership at 8 p.m. on weekdays was down 23 percent from last year, Rachel Maddow was off 24 percent and Lawrence ODonnell down 26 percent. Among the 25-to-54-year-old demographic that is the basis for advertising sales, the prime-time lineup lost nearly half its audience. Daytime isnt much better.

“MSNBC changed from traditional news to a political network with a liberal lens.”
Maybe THAT was the problem.
I used to be as likely to turn on MSNBC as Fox. Back then, Chris Mathews was sane.
Yeah, funny how something can be right in front of your face and you can't see it.
Yeah, how is PMSNBC any different from the leftist propaganda garbage the big three networks have churned out since their creation ?
Sounds like left-oriented talk radio’s history. Maybe they’re just not all that interesting to individuals who can exercise choice.
The phrase "they shoot horses, don't they" comes to mind.
MSLSD is pretty indistinguishable from CNN these days.
Indeed. There was a time was MSNBC was semi-normal.
Now it is a freak show.
Why is AP sliming it’s brother? Both are political outlets with a liberal bent, and neither has any compunction about fabricating falsehood to advance the agenda.
They’re louder and more obnoxious about it, and they don’t pretend to be mainstream.
I feel old to think we watched MSNBC (pre-Fox) as the more moderate/conservative alternative to CNN. We enjoyed John Gibson daily. So many of the late 90’s MSNBC team jumped to Fox. Their replacements are not worthy to step into their stead.
Fire everyone.
That was a long time ago. I watched Harball when it first came on because it was right around the beginning of the whole Monica Lewinsky deal, and Matthews was appalled at Clinton's behavior.
But he go over it. I remember once Christ took a nutty because some Republican who was advocating tax cuts used the JFK phrase "a rising tide lifts all boats." I heard Matthews arguing passionately on the Howie Carr show that Republicans shouldn't use that quote because Kennedy was a Democrat.
That's when he knew Matthews was bonkers.
No, I think their target audience is more interested in getting their "news" from the Daily Show.
Of course, as someone else has pointed out: they could get almost the same slant on the news from CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC. The others just aren't as shrill.
“Fire everyone.”
And replace them all with liberals.
Only a veterinarian can fix MSNBC.
If by fixed is meant neutered, it's too late.
