Everyone is furious about this photo of kids climbing on a Vietnam memorial

A photographer named Matthew Munson took several photos during a recent visit to Washington, D.C., and one in particular is stirring up conversation about American history, parenting, and respect.

Munson shared his photos to Facebook, and there's some standard DC fare—that obelisk called the Washington Monument, some military memorials.

But one of Munson's memorial photos speaks volumes without making a sound.

It's an image of the Vietnam Women's Memorial, which serves to honor the women who served during the U.S. war with Vietnam, from 1955 to 1975. Atop this statue is a young girl using it like playground equipment. On the ground, another young girl appears to be climbing up. All this as a military veteran in a wheelchair, presumably escorted by family members, goes by.

The man pushing the veteran's wheelchair has a look of palpable disgust. The veteran himself has an unplaceable, one-of-a-kind look that hardly suggests pleasant thoughts. And Munson's Internet audience, chiming in with their comments on this particular photo, are similarly disappointed.

I can think of no better tribute to our fallen than playing children.

I remember visiting the Wall with a buddy who also served in Vietnam and we were telling each other stories about the funny things some of the guys we knew listed on the wall (specifically, a buddy I knew as "Wimpy" who was so skinny he could drop his pants at will by sucking in his stomach) and we were laughing.

A very angry lady came up to us and objected to our laughing and told us off. I told her "Lady, those were friends of ours. If we want to remember them happily, it's our right".

If you are creating a 3D sculpture to stay outside, you have to plan for such possibilities of rough handling.

I'm sure the statue was unharmed. I'm also sure I would never allow any child under my care to do such a thing. It's not that bad; but it's not good, either.

I wonder what God thinks of all those statues and what not in the DC.

I hope you are both wrong.

Being old has some benefits.

When a customer began hollering insults at a uniformed soldier in a store....and did not stop when I asked him...I began a loud version of God Bless America and hundreds of shoppers joined in, and the idiot ran for the door. The soldier stopped and waited to greet and thank all the customers at the checkout in WAL-MART!!

I hope that including all the other tourists would have made your prediction wrong.

If that sculpture is somehow melted some night, I probably did it. It is an insult to the memory of the real heroes of the Vietnam War, placed there to placate radical feminists in their attempts to change history.

There were no women in the field in Vietnam. The only US women in Vietnam were in the rear areas as nurses or Donut Dollies for the Red Cross. The very few women killed in those eight years were killed by long-range rocket fire by the NVA/VC.

If they wanted to honor the medical heroes in Vietnam, there should have been a statue that showed the heroic MEDEVAC pilots, the Corpsmen/Medics, and the surgeons - but they didn't. What we got was the fake poses in that statue. It's an insult.

Thank you for your service. I can understand why humor is a release from all the things you went through.

When we visit the Wall, I weep. My fiance's name displayed, and even though I've come to terms with the loss, I still cry.

I am very sorry for your loss. All those guys were irreplaceable and a day doesn't go by when I don't ask God why I made it and they didn't

They all were the very best our country could produce.

Still waiting for your answer, the BS flag is on the field.

Unless there has been some dramatic re-engineering of history, there were no female EOD techs in Vietnam, wounded or otherwise. In short, somebody's lying.

Not unusual behavior for the ME, MYSELF AND I GENERATION!

Who have been brainwashed by public schools, public TV to be thoughtless, irresponsible non thinking BOTS, who scare their parents with the threat of a 911 call for abuse so they can get their way. Parents have had control of their children taken away from them and fear to punish them with a swat on the butt.

Not much different than the way Royal elites were raised. Some one else took the blame and was punished back then. As a object lesson. Instead of the Board of Education being applied to their own rear ends for bad behavior.

Just sent an e-mail to their President asking if there were any female EOD Techs in Vietnam. I’ll post his answer when I get it.

Kids play.

And parents teach.

The kids’ parents have gravely failed in their duty to “teach their children well”.

If I remember right (haven’t been down there for a few years), the sky-scanning person is also female; presumably another nurse looking for the desperately needed Dust-off.

"...yes, race-obsessed."

I'll admit I took note of it too. Reason is it could explain why the child hasn't been taught why that behavior is inappropriate. On the other hand, I'm sure the kids would have rather play of some playground equipment, but the nanny staters probably had it removed.

I’ve been extremely uncooperative with diplomatic protection over the years, refusing to vacate public spaces at their whim. Admittedly, means I’ve also been roughed up more than a few times by the diplomat’s own security. South American diplomats have some real tough guys with them, and the security of knowing that they will not be arrested for their actions.

Never had the secret service actually lay a hand on me. Thank you for not harming the person who man handled you.

The photographer was on Fox and said the parents were egging the kids on.

From the president of the Vietnam EOD Vets Association:

"Sir: To the best of my knowledge, there were no women in EOD until sometime in 75! I have never heard of any woman serving as EOD while in Vietnam!

Dusty"

It appears that the Stolen Valor Effect includes ladies now...
