I terminated all the wiring and had one bad crimp. After that, cranks right up.
One step forward, one back. I saw coolant leaking around the thermostat. There are two hairline cracks at the holes for both rear bolts. Order another housing tonight.
The flasher socket and flasher are on the way. Assuming weather and my health hold up, I plan on getting wiring done this week. I cut in a hole to mount a stainless steel light switch panel. Not the prettiest cutting in the world but it’s in. That will run wipers and some auxiliary lights.
Springs and tires will be the next big project. I found a kit for $550 or so not counting bushings and some other small parts sold separately. I’ve got 4 6 ton floor jackstands and a couple of 2 ton floor hydraulics.
Once that is done and it proves it can stay running, fork out for the steering parts and get that done by a shop.
I’ve got some doubts about the transmission, probably my imagination but considering age plus wear and tear, I may be right. A few months back I flushed it with diesel and topped it off with fresh 90.
Isn't that always the case?
Wiring, tires, steering, tranny - wow. But, you are really going to get that Jeep in great working order.
My friend helped me replace the EGR valve in my JK Rubicon. It is really a bear of a job. We took the inner plastic fender off - and the plastic fasteners I ordered online were the wrong replacements (you had to drill out the old ones, no choice). I have a manual transmission, but if anyone owns a JK and has an auto, I heard the dipstick is right in the way, and there is almost no access there to begin with. While I had the fender off, we replaced the upstream O2 sensor as well. Maybe not a good move, as hear Jeeps are fiddly about after market O2 sensors, but I would have kicked myself about not changing is as it was starring me in the face.
Keep at it - you are getting there with yours!
Yesterday was a slow go of drilling, ragged sawzall cutting that the three switch plate pretty much covers up. I am not a sheetmetal guy.
Sounds like you and your friend had a good time in sensor land. I like my older stuff that doesn’t have a lot of electronics. Don’t get me wrong, the Tacoma and Camry are nice rides and love them.
It’s sat long enough and I tend to go through bouts of fooling with it and then not. I’ve discovered from a guy at the office a back dirt state service road that bypasses a tight part of I26 to I77. After driving it a few times, I remembered how much I enjoyed bouncing on a trail.
That is about all the offroad it will probably ever see. Parts cost too much and in some cases not exactly easy to get.
Besides once this one is road and trustworthy, I will need it as a tug. My dead CJ7 which has sat for a long time is something that needs attention. It’s in a building with no power and on a grade. But it’s rent free, a few yards away from the local PD that roll by regularly and a few watchful neighbors.
It will need a new engine but I can prep smaller bits for myself and save up for the engine and paying a shop to swap. If it’s operational I can bring it home. There isn’t anywhere practical to keep a DOA.
Just new here. I just bought a jeep commander. Still new with it, but I would like to install some upgrades like lift kit and larger mag wheels. I would like to ask what brand of wheels are those installed in your jeep?
LOL. How many miles are on it?
HEH ... under the hood is 11 y/o Cuban boy peddling like crazy....maybe it’s Elián González?
That’s a one of a kind Jeep! Just look at those wheels! hahaha
It can second as Obie from Nairobi’s limo when he’s in Kenya.
Cool rig! awesome tires you got there too
Those look cool! Where can I buy those cool shift knobs?

Inline six *bump*
That’s one reason I like my old BMW.
As for Jeeps, I feel like we’re living in a golden era. In my area you just about can’t drive anywhere without seeing a cool new jeep that someone has modded to be even cooler. I mean they’re all all over the place.
Thanks for the ping.
Just changed the radiator on my Wrangler last Tuesday afternoon. Took less than an hour.
I put a grill guard on, but the glue I used didn't hold, so I had to take the whole grill off and start over. Took about an hour and a half - because the glue refused to dry.
Keep the JK forever if you can. They sure hold their value. I see people this summer driving their 70s, 80s, 90, 00’s, and new Jeeps everywhere, with the doors off and top down. Amazing vehicles.
I have to reinstall the fan shroud. It’s being held on now by nuts and bolts. Picked up some nylon securing bolts today and will swap them all out tomorrow.
That’s the thing I love about my Jeep. They’re SOOO00OOO easy to work on.
Since last we convened, I got my hands on a certified pre-owned 2014 Rubicon w/ about 15K and am loving it. Last three primary vehicles I’ve owned have been a 1994 Jeep, a 2004 Jeep and a 2014 Jeep. I’ll check back in 2024 and let ya’ll know what I got :-)
