Btw....when his daddy and I were kids...we lived near a ww2 era jeep junkyard owned by a dude named junior. Junior let us do whatever we wanted. If we could get it running....we could kill it. Oh the joy....we had no idea.
Now....sittin where the jeep junkyard was is a subdivision of mcmansions.
Just bought a 2015 2DR Wrangler Sport as my first Jeep. It came with 17 inch wheels and a couple of extras, but it’s pretty basic. Things it does well so far: go lots of places I wouldn’t take anything else (2 ft slush for instance). Things it doesn’t do well so far: store anything! I kind of wish I had checked out the 4DR model, at least then I wouldn’t need a trailer to go deer hunting. :-( But it is fun off-road if a little squirrelly on-road. Saving up for a trailer and a rack to get gear out to where the beast can go.
That and if you were 6 foot tall your shins were scraping the dashboard.
Really? Don’t really remember that part. Course when I got rid of it I was only about 25 and pretty limber....back then the Holy Grail was the “Golden Eagle”. If you can find an original one now in good shape it’s gonna cost you a bundle.
Funny Jeep story. I’ll make it quick.
A lot of my buddies had Jeeps back then. We would get together and ride a bunch of weekends. And drink.(heck, we were doing 25mph or less mostly). Anyway. “Runt” and I were riding together, top and doors off. We were last in line and radio playing, cold beer, beautiful scenery, great weather. You name it just a perfect day. Runt is dipping Skol and we’re just riding and talking and listenin to music and just enjoying life. And I look over...And Runt is gone!!!! Just disappeared! WTF???? And I’m thinking, well I know he was here a minute ago. Right? So where-in-the-hell is Runt? So I stop. Clear my head. Think about this thing for a minute. Turn around a go back. About a mile down the road there is Runt. So I pull up and I go “Runt! What the hell?” Well, Runt leaned out the side to spit and fell out. I thought I was going nuts for a minute cause I thought I knew Runt was in the Jeep. And then he just wasn’t!!!
Wow great times. I bought a ‘67 CJ5 with a fresh Earl Sheib paint job on it in High Skrool.
We would go out on the weekends and play in the black mud around the rice fields on the Texas Gulf coast. Seems like I would manage to break enough stuff to wipe out every cent I earned. Then go back and do it again next week.
Somewhere, I have a picture of me blasting across a several acre field in a cloud of dust where no vegitation would ever grow. Some years that site would become the Brio Superfund HAZMAT site. It is or was the most expensive clean-up in the US.
Wife just got the Cherokee T trail hawk, loves it. Lol, she thinks it compares to our two most recent yj’ s. Whatever, as long as she’s happy with it!
.
I have a ‘90, and a ‘95 with similar mileage on them, and they go to work every day, mostly in steep, wooded hills, and they never fail, although they have occasionally gotten stuck in 4WD-low, and had to be highway’d back home that way.
.
.
You got lucky!
I had a friend that went to jail for ten years for a similar thing that went the wrong way.
.
I screwed up and wasted good money on a 79 Wagoneer. POS is an accurate description. Not surprising that AMC folded.
When is the Jeep Pickup Truck coming out?
Here is a question. Consumer Reports regularly disparages Jeeps of all models in terms of reliability etc
I have had two and liked them a lot. What is CRs issue?
That is a (very) good question.
Saw two of those being towed off the Rubicon last year. One was the factory demo machine.
“What is CRs issue?”
Just my observation but CR seems to be anti US biased. Buddy of mine runs the Chrysler dealership and he used to point out that the Mitsubishi badged products were always rated higher than the Chrysler ones that came off the same assembly line.
Consumer Reports always disparages them - they say it is because the "ride" of a Jeep (especially a Wrangler) is "bumpy" and there is "noise at highway speed." Well, duh.
I think they feel obliged to print that year, after year, after year, after year - because if some soccer mom purchases a Jeep and suddenly realizes it isn't a Lexus SUV, she will have a cow and complain to CR for not "warning" her.
Nice. Love the color.
There is the key.
The great thing about Jeeps is you can add to them very easily. You can take a Sport and add a lift kit and larger tires, and suddenly you have a Custom Jeep that you would not have recognized a few hours before.
I think I would have been better off with the 4 door (sometimes). Still, the 2 door has a certain charm and you almost can't go wrong, except the back seat is pretty useless unless you have the top and doors off. Too darn hard to get into.
