if the blanket is 3x4 it would be 14, three for each of the shorter sides and 4 each for the longer sides. 2x6 and 1x12 would be the same

Why would 2x6 by the same? Wouldn’t it be 16 instead of 14? And 1x12 would be 26.

Perhaps the questioner might tell us how many units wide the "border" is to be. Neither is the information given that tells the student whether the finished or the unfinished blanket is to be 12 square units. IOW, is the border within the blanket or added to its perimeter?

This is a very poorly worded question, doubtless dreamed up by a Teacher's College Education Major, rather than some sort of technical person.

BTW, 2x6 and 1x12 would be the same
Wrong. One presumes a "square unit" has 4 sides, so by your reasoning: (2)1 + (2)12 = 26

This also might be an internet hoax, an update of the old joke: "Farmer Brown has planted 14 acres of potatoes. Farmer Jones has 200 acres of winter wheat. What color is Farmer Smith's wife's dress?"

BTW, where is the question en español? In Ebonics? Is Cursive allowed in the answer? May one use a calculator? The question is also racist and highlights the Bush-caused situation in Ferguson where the baby daddy done been shot by the po-po and baby ain't got no blanket.

3 x 4 would be 14, 2 x 6 would be 16, and 1 x 12 would be 26.

There are an infinite number of answers. It's a system of 2 equations in 3 unknowns. The answer that minimizes is 13.86 (approximately), which occurs for a square.

Nope. On a 2x6, the perimeter would be 16

On a 1x12, the perimeter would be 26.
