The fundies will go bat guano crazy, but other than that, no one cares who does what behind their closed doors so long as it is consensual adults. The more the homosexuals throw their thing in my face, the more I care, the less they do, the less I could care less.
I don’t know about killed, but I’ve heard some pretty horrific bashing stories from a guy that used to hang out with the bashers. But I think that was LA.

Well Mayor Moscone was also killed at the same time, but his blood doesn't count because he wasn't gay. Also, Feinstein then started to carry a gun and, AFAIK, still does, but heavily supports gun control for the rest of us. Other than that, she's maneuvered a billion dollars in government contacts to her husband because conservatives won't release the glass ceiling, otherwise she could have been a Senator.
