There are countless television shows that far outstayed their welcome, becoming almost unwatchable self-parodies by the end. The Drew Carey Show, The Office, and Scrubs are three extreme examples of this phenomenon. As series drag on, show fans become show writers and what ends up happening is effectively fanfic on screen. Its why The Simpsons still makes the same jokes again and again.
Parks and Recreation isnt unwatchable yet, but boy is it close. This is a shame. While the series was never great, it was still one of the most consistent sitcoms of the last decade. All the characters were nuanced and well-acted. The humor was on point. But now, in its final year, the writers seem to think that these characterswho dont actually exist, mind youare so intrinsically funny that just having them onscreen is enough to make the audience laugh. Theyre wrong.
Yet there is another, more unique aspect to the shows decline that bears noting: its transition to socialist propaganda. By propaganda I dont mean merely something that furthers a political viewpoint. I mean spreading a specific worldview through deceit and hypocrisy. Spoilers ahead for the last season of the series:

Number 2. Hire left wing kook liberal democrats from big cities with Liberal majors to act in the show.
Number 3. Broadcast it on a network ran by left wing kook liberal democrats from big cities with Liberal Majors.
And so on...
Ron Swanson was a good character originally, but of course he had to “evolve”.
TURNED into socialist propaganda?
It’s been socialist propaganda since day one.
I watched it once a couple of years ago and I thought it was socialist propaganda even at that time. I’ve never watched it since.
It was so political that it wasn’t even funny. It deals with unionized city employees being harassed by evil Republicans and something that sounded to me like a Scott Walker governor, so what more do you need to know about it?
Lighten up Francis. It’s a TV show.
Never saw it.
I watched about 15-20 minutes of it on Netflix. Did not see one funny moment. Haven’t wasted any time on it since.
It should be called “Perks and Reparations”
Kind of like a SCOTUS justice, hunh?
“Its been socialist propaganda since day one.”
This.
I stopped watching this show after the lead b*tch mentioned Joe Biden for the umpteenth time.
some people at work told me i should give it a try. Don’t think I will now. I watch very few shows. Archer, Walking Dead, Big Bang, the Americans. That’s about it. better stuff on you tube.
Vikings and Better Call Saul are very good.
She always had pictures of lib women in the background in her office. They had her swooning over Joe Biden when he made a cameo appearance on the show. After that, I quit watching.
I never saw Breaking Bad, after dexter it really turned me off. Still haven’t seen Mad Men.
1) Everyone spies now, if you think otherwise you’re naive. Google and the NSA all know my business. Lib shows already go after big business, this is not new.
2) This is just silly. Anyone who watches the show knows Leslie LOVES the waffles at JJ’s and Ron LOVES the large breakfasts. They want their favorite diner to stay open. That’s all.
3) Leslie works for the Parks Dept. so why is anyone surprised that she’d want to use the land for a park? That doesn’t seem devious... just obvious.
4) Ben turns his back on Pawnee? Wouldn’t that be true for everyone in Congress then? Did Cruz turn his back on Texas? And besides, Ben was 18 when he bankrupted another town. He’s grown up a lot since then. Good grief.
5) I don’t get it, what’s wrong with a 5 year plan? In college I had to plan out 4 years. My boss asked during my review where I see myself in 5 years.
I think this whole article is just silly. If you don’t like the show, just don’t watch it. Good grief.
I started watching Mad Men, but it got old very fast. Much ado about not very much. Breaking Bad OTOH was every bit as good as the critics and fans said. Saul is somewhat less dark, at least so far, but very much in the same drama/dark comedy mode.
It might actually turn out to be just as good as Breaking Bad.
Never understood the appeal of Mad Men-or Walking Dead, for that matter.
