Black hole 12bn times more massive than sun is discovered

Scientists name new ‘object’ SDSS J0100+2802 and say it is 12.8bn light years from Earth and was formed just 900m years after the Big Bang

Artist’s impression of a supermassive black hole at the centre of a distant quasar. Scientists believe they have discovered one which is 12 billion times the size of our sun.

*************************************************************

A monster black hole powering “the brightest lighthouse in the distant universe” has been discovered that is 12bn times more massive than the sun, scientists have revealed.

The extraordinary object is at the centre of a quasar - an intensely powerful galactic radiation source - with a million billion times the sun’s energy output.

For years the nature of quasars, discovered in 1963, remained a mystery. Today scientists believe they are generated by matter heating up as it is dragged into supermassive black holes at the centre of distant galaxies.

The new object, named SDSS J0100+2802, is 12.8bn light years from Earth and was formed just 900m years after the Big Bang that gave birth to the universe.

Astronomers cannot explain how such an enormous black hole could have formed so early in cosmic history, soon after the first stars and galaxies emerged.

does. My mind is already boggled, as you can see.

Maybe God determined that He needed to clean up some stuff in that corner of the Universe.

There are a few scientists that question the red-shift as a valid measurement,

...as did me and my buddies last night at the sports bar. We all said "whaaaaaaat?"

The article sez “black hole”, not “half-black hole”. Silly.

Yeah, ummm - as a rocket scientist, I can tell you that there are strings attached.

The blind leading the blind comes to mind.

Now, interestingly, the area where this was/is taking place could just be empty now, the hole having sucked up the surrounding area for thousands of light years.

Just what I was thinking. Maybe millions of light years. That would also mean it is much bigger now than what we are seeing. Forget stars, this thing may be sucking up galaxies.

Looks like a black sphere not a black hole to me.

That’s just it... We don’t. For some objects with a discernible relative motion, they can extrapolate where it “should” be, assuming they know all of the variables that could affect its trajectory.

Which, with something the size of the Universe, is impossible.

If we ever come up with a “real-time” map, things would look radically different.

“Not possible” some will say. They are wrong.

Two ways I can think of off the top of my head would be using a quantum level “query”, or sonar analog, to figure out where a mass is.

The other way would be via some kind of gravity scanning technique. Every bit of mass in the Universe has an impact, however small, on every other bit of mass in the same Universe. Figure out how to look at “gravity” directly, and it should tell you where everything is at right now rather than billions of years ago.

These are both hinted at in various theories, although I’m not sure anyones looking in to them as an applied science yet.

I believe God is definitely in the mix. The rest are theoretical details. And it is very exciting work.

The black sphere is not the black hole, it's the "event horizon" that surrounds the black hole.

The actual black hole is - well, no one knows for sure, but - probably much smaller than the event horizon. In fact, some people think the black hole itself may be smaller than a proton, but weigh 12 billion times as much as the sun.

The sphere is a representation of the event horizon. The hole itself is 0 volume and infinite mass within our space.

You’re welcome.

BTW, Alan Guth has a great lecture series on Youtube about the early universe. Back to Part 2 right after this.

Best....
