When the nation's top nutrition panel released its latest dietary recommendations on Thursday, the group did something it had never done before: weigh in on whether people should be drinking coffee. What it had to say is pretty surprising.
Not only can people stop worrying about whether drinking coffee is bad for them, according to the panel, they might even want to consider drinking a bit more.
The panel cited minimal health risks associated with drinking between three and five cups per day. It also said that consuming as many as five cups of coffee each day (400 mg) is tied to several health benefits, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
"We saw that coffee has a lot of health benefits," said Miriam Nelson, a professor at Tufts University and one of the committees members. "Specifically when you're drinking more than a couple cups per day."
That's great news if you're already drinking between three and five cups each day, which Nelson and the rest of the panel consider a "moderate" level of consumption. But you know what? You probably aren't, because people in this country actually tend to consume a lot less than that. On average, Americans only drink about one cup of coffee per day, according to data collected by the United States Department of Agriculture. Even when Americans drank the most coffee they ever have, back in 1946, they still only drank two cups a day on average.
Interestingly enough, it isn't just people in the United States who drink less-than-moderate amounts of joe each day. No country in the world downs more than 3 cups each day per capita,

I never saw anyone get self-righteous because they don't drink coffee. Takes all kinds, I guess!
Financed by coffee industry?
I would drink more if I hadn’t have finally discovered it was my sole source for daily heartburn...
What’s a cup?
I use a 14 oz. mug most days. Used to drink 2.5 of those. Now, I try to keep to 1 - 1.5 mugs a day.
Its fun to watch the addicts before their morning cup of mud.
I used to come in early, but learned real quickly to be in a different part of the building, from 7:58am - 8:15am !

Injected intravenously...
Which artificial sweetener should I go with next? I typically buy artificial sweetener packets in large quantities.
Now, I might refill it 5, 6....12 times, but it's the same cup!!
Now THAT is a thing of beauty!
WELL ... it’s back to coffee, chocolate and high cholesterol (and tasty) food!
They obviously didn’t poll night shift nurses on how many cups of coffee they drink. They’d have to ask how many pots. And then there’s the sludge factor- how many cups is a cup of sludge from a pot left cooking for hours. There’s some bang for your buck. Or maybe the answer was, “I drink zero cups of coffee during the day. Hehehe.”
It's for the children.
I drink 4-5 cups a day. Nothing happens in the morning until I’ve had one and that gives me enough fuel to drink 3-4 more and eat breakfast. Also, no one should have to be anywhere until at least 11 am.
“If it didnt taste like battery acid despite dumping cream and sugar in it”
Don’t drink crappy coffee then!
Drip coffee gives me heartburn and does taste like battery acid.
I have a real espresso maker at home; and buy good whole beans. I make a cappuccino (espresso and foamed milk) at home for probably 15 or 20 cents per cup. It smells and tastes good; and I never get heartburn from it.
Its YOUR coffee. Dress it up however you need to.
I am with you tho, If I didnt pour heavy whipping cream and pure sugar, or Baileys, or Wild Turkey into it, its just nasty tasting.
Checkin’ in.
