Samsung Electronics reported its lowest annual profit since 2011 during its earnings call today as its smartphone sales continue to suffer from increasing competition. In 2014, the companys profit was 25 trillion won, a 32 percent drop from a high of 36.8 trillion won in 2013.
Its 4Q2014 net profit fell 27 percent to 5.3 trillion won year-over-year, in-line with Samsungs earning guidance earlier this month.
The Korean tech giant reported that its mobile units earnings dropped 64 percent year-over-year to 1.96 trillion won, marketing its fifth quarterly decline in a row. Mobile sales accounted for just 58 percent of Samsungs total operating profit last year, a significant decrease from 70 percent in 2013. The company said smartphone shipments fell in 4Q2014 and will continue to decline this quarter.

Not today. . . my daughter called and said she was having trouble getting her email on her iPhone from Yahoo too.

Here’s a google search link; plenty to read. I refuse to buy from a company that treats its customers the way they have en masse:

> I bought my Samsung Plasma HD TV back in 2006.
It is running around 16 to 18 hours a day.
It is one of the highest quality well built items Ive ever owned.
That and my Samsung S4 phone...it just works...doesnt everyone want a phone that works?
I will never buy a different brand, ever.
Well your experience is the exception if you check around. I used to be a Samung fanboy until I got burned twice in a tow on high dollar items and they refused to make good on it.
Yahoo consistently has problems but then again they probably have an extremely overloaded network plus NSA's pipeline probably slows it down a lot.
My one gripe with the iPhone is the "Apple knows best" philosophy, which gets down to missing customization features. One example: There's many apps I don't want to upgrade due to horrible reviews, but there's no "skip this version" to make the icon count go away.
Losses of income/revenue of ‘no name’ Android phone businesses - does not mean they are not making, shipping and selling phones by the tens of thousands. If one takes the combined number of ‘no name’ sales - the number of units shipped is quite considerable. South East Asian Countries are awash in low name / no name brands... There will likely be a period where these companies totally fail from not making a profit... but in the mean time they are taking sales from the top names...shipping phones to buying customers.
I am in Thailand and there are thousands of small shops selling phones ... and only a few are top name brands. They sell because it is what South East Asians can afford. I have an iMobile - iStyle Android ... cost just over a 100 bucks ... that is a lot of money for an Asian. 65 million people in Thailand and more than half have a mobile phone as they call them... Only a small percentage have Samsung or Apple.
Exactly. . . they make no name Android cell phones and tablets and post losses. . . Somebody is shipping money out the door. . . Or. . . They are cooking the books, and profits are sticking to fingers not showing on the books. Xiaomi makes a profit but doesn’t pay the licensing and royalties required for the IP in their phones and tablets the big names do, you can bet these no name companies don’t either.
You can bet a lot of those "top name brands" aren't the top name brands either. Xiaomi makes a line of iPhone look alikes that even have Android skins that look like iOS. . . and come in boxes that look like iphone boxes, and they aren't the only ones.
I am not ‘rooting’ for these small no name phone makers or their resellers... Just reporting what I observe...

Buying tech stuff anymore is crap shoot. I’ve had good Samsung products and I’ve had really crappy. I had 2 Samsung HDTV’s that failed right after the 3 year warrant expired. The image pixelated on both TV’s. I also had a Samsung front load washer destroy itself when the tub detached from the drive motor. The repair would have cost more than a new machine.
That said, I have a family of four that have had several different iPhones, iPads and Macbooks for the past 8 years or so. I’ve never had a personally owned piece of Apple hardware fail. I work in IT and have seen some failures at work. Mostly the displays.
Thanks.
