In the sparsely populated Karoo desert in the heart of South Africa's Northern Cape, the spirit of apartheid lives on.
I spent a few days in Orania, a town established in 1991 where no black people live.
I was part of a BBC crew, including Zimbabwean journalist Stanley Kwenda, who were accredited to visit.

Interesting idea.................
Have to say....for me...that’s a inappropriate comment.
Don’t understand the purpose of posting white guilt BBC story link lead with 3 lines of copy by BBC steno about some whites only place in race torn South Africa with out at least posting map of location and pictures.
You are probably trying to equate the US with Africa. Its totally different over there. Everything is tribal. Now that the blacks have taken over they are putting the white farmers off their farms and letting the blacks have the farms. But the blacks have no idea of how to farm so everything just goes to ruin. Same deal in Zimbabwe. You need to have some discussions with white South Africans who have lived in such terror that they told me their wives could not close their eyes in the shower to wash their face until they moved here. They were so afraid of their homes being broken into and being raped and killed.
I understand...you don’t understand.
It was your language...use of words that made me say what I did.
You need to understand how your words "sound".
Undoubtedly!
My words sound exactly the way I intended them to sound. Its a different place than America. The blacks are different and now that a black communist govt has been put in place whites who have lived in SA for a hundred or more years are being thrown out and also terrorized and killed. Their farms are being seized by blacks with govt approval. So I don’t know what problem you have with those words. If you are white go over there to Johannesburg and walk down the street without a bodyguard then talk to me about words.
:)
Words sound..yes. But they also mean things.
"The blacks are different"....your words once again.
Do you mean globally, or just in So. Africa.
I just don't cotton to blanket statements...And I'm getting that from you. Maybe it's my issue. Tell me I'm wrong.
:)
It was actually kind of racists for me to be bothered, in a way.
I live in NYC (Manhattan, formerly Crown Heights), Phoenix, and outside Tel Aviv.
NYC, on the subway, blacks and arabs cat-call “Joooo” at least once a commute, and I get the hard shoulder by groups of blacks or arabs who walk out of their way to cause trouble. That’s part of being Jewish in NYC. No big deal. They bother everyone.
Had the occasional good-intentioned, but annoying, airline passenger pray for me and press tracts on to me. I generally ask them if they know about FreeRepublic, and get their screen name (seriously). Turn the discussion to politics, where we generally agree 110%. We get along fine, and I appreciate the concern.
But the passive aggressive WASPy intolerance of New Englanders (and I include Reform Jewish people in “WASPy” for this purpose) just grates the ever-living heck out of me.
Give me a black bum cat-calling me any day.
No, I understood it perfectly. I was just pointing out that he was guaranteed the God-given right in the constitution to live where you want, and with whom you want.
As a life-long resident of the Gay State I'd suggest to you that as white and wealthy Nantucket is Martha's Vineyard is a bit whiter and wealthier.
I’m not Jewish, but I do have relatives who are anti-Catholic, and are relentless in trying to convert me. When my sister passed, they mentioned at the memorial service that she had been trying to make me see the error of my ways. I don’t think that they had any idea that what they were doing was inappropriate or insensitive.
People can be oblivious to how their behaviour affects others.
What he said, only it turns decidedly more pink-skinned and blue collar during the lonely Winter months.
How strange. If it was during the summer it’s primarily summer visitors. If during the off-season it’s locals. A lot of people from New York go there in the summer. (They’re called ‘two-one-twos’ because of their area code.) But 212’s wouldn’t find you unusual.
Other than people pointing at you - how was the wedding? Did you enjoy the beach or looking at the boats?
“I think the word “jungle” got my attention...”
Good because that’s the way it is over there. In SA and most of Africa everything is still tribal. Its not civilized like in America. That’s why you see the fratricide going on everywhere over there. One tribe trying to kill another. Hacking each other to death with machetes. White farmers out in the countryside are getting murdered on their farms. Its the jungle my friend. Glad it got your attention.
I think you know why I replied the way I did.
Be safe...........
