'Avatar' sequels pushed back a year, James Cameron says

James Cameron's 'Avatar' sequels have been delayed a year, with the first now arriving in 2017

James Cameron's return trip to Pandora is taking a bit longer than originally planned. The release for the director's three "Avatar" sequels has been pushed back a year, with the first to arrive in late 2017, Cameron told the Associated Press on Wednesday.

Cameron is in pre-production on the sci-fi films, which he intends to shoot simultaneously in New Zealand and then release over consecutive years. Although the first sequel was to hit theaters in time for Christmas 2016, Cameron said that target was probably too ambitious given the intricacy of prepping three films at once.

"There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a standalone film," he told the AP. Twentieth Century Fox, the studio behind the "Avatar" films, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Cameron's remarks. cComments

Although the delay might disappoint "Avatar" fans, the news isn't shocking given the scale of the project and Cameron's reputation as a perfectionist. His last two narrative films, "Avatar" and "Titanic," both saw their release dates pushed back and ended up faring pretty well. (They're the two highest-grossing movies of all time, and each was nominated for the best-picture Oscar, with "Titanic" winning).

Pushing back the first "Avatar" sequel does, however, leave Fox with a notable hole to fill during the popular end-of-the-year moviegoing season.

My father-in-law LOVES Avatar. Obsessively.

I trashed the movie at the dinner table one night. I talked through the relentless military bashing in the movie and said I would never watch it again for that reason alone.

He was *pissed*. The people who like this movie have had their brains addled by it.

There is also a great deal of coordination between the release of the Avatar sequels and the opening of Avatar-land in Disney’s Animal Kingdom park.

It is highly likely that the park construction has a lot to do with this delay.

I heard they thought of the story line for the first movie in about an hour. It shows. Even the name of the miracle mineral, unobtainium, is stupid.

You should have tossed in some of the eco wacko aspects of it too about how man destroys everything he touches. Of course that might have sent him over the edge. :>}

I’m sure he’ll find a way to work in an anti-fracking theme, or possibly gay marriage, because that’s all that film was - a left wing fantasy demonizing all that the left despises.

Lawrence of pandera did not impress, the visuals were nice but that was about it.

If you want to make it less bad mentally think of the company as the east india company not the real military.

Unobtainium - An engineer friend of mine used that term a decade + before that movie came out, “It’s expensive, it’s in submarine hulls and expensive motorcycle parts” was his joke.

He has a Saharan wit, seeing an A-arm assembly on the side of the road on the way to a job one day elicited the comment “You NEED those”...

I liked Avatar’s visuals but really it was the same plot as The Abyss.
Even the glow in the dark special effects.

Yes thank you, I saw and understood the movie. Don't get me started. My concerns go way beyond "demonizing the military." Every liberal movie does that. It was anti-capitalist, hocus-pocus, environmentalist, global-consciousness, naive nonsense at its worst.
