The upcoming front cover for the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo will picture the prophet Muhammad holding a sign that says "Je suis Charlie."
While many in a (let's say hypothetical) march would personally like one expression of free speech, but not necessarily the other, should there be marches supporting free speech for both Charlie Hebdo - and let's say works like Serrano did ("The Piss Christ") and not getting mad at either of the depictions?
In other words, temporarily suspending all dislike for either in the name of free speech in this march, as some in the media do support Charlie Hebdo's right to publish what they will, but don't believe that it follows the rule of while you can, should you?
One thing is that Charlie Hebdo takes no prisoners. They are an equal opportunity offender...
Over time, I do believe that is where the overwhelming majority of society will ultimately end up - accepting both of them.
Who the hell was ever killed over “Piss Christ”?
Did anyone even get a bruise, or a stubbed toe over that?
Screw this idiotic moral equivalency.
There are people who’d be interested in Christianity (RCC, Protestanism, etc.) Judaism, or just in learning about God and the Bible. But, they see the IslamoNazis spewing hate and filth (and murdering innocent people) all around the world. They figure, “religion doesn’t look like such a good thing, after all...” ....... and they stop looking into God and the Bible.
Satan wins another round...
But a Koran in a jar of piss and snap a photo if you want a comparison. Or run THIS cartoon in every paper.
First I want to see the piss mutthamed version and maybe a few other mutthamed versions of the disgusting things they have done to sacred Catholic and Christian symbols, let’s see that happen without worldwide jihad and maybe we can talk.
It isn’t a matter of accepting either of them but at the heart is the rejection of the idea that one is justified in killing because of an offensive cartoon or piece of art something that Islamists are prone to do.
Remember: Charlie Hebdo strives to be offensive. Their tagline is “irresponsible journalism”. Such is more normalized in France than in USA.
If you can not tell the difference in the two religions one that will kill you if you mock it, demand you convert or die that has not set up one single freedom based society and one that will just look at you in disgust if you mock it then you have missed the boat by a long shot.
The conversation is about fighting for the right of free-speech, not accepting blaspheming art or not. The conversation is about one religion that can not get along with others without killing and enslaving.
Easy to answer. Was Andres Serrano an “equal opportunity offender?”
Question answered.
I agree. Christians don’t go around murdering people like some Muslims do, except in the cases of Timothy McVeigh and the abortion clinic bombers, but they are indeed far less in nature and scope compared to some Muslims. But that isn’t what I was talking about. Again, should there be marches (or rather will there) where people temporarily suspend dislike for depictions of either in the name of supporting free speech?
Totally agree, our side never said that the "artist" of piss Christ did not have the right to do it or that he should be punished for it.
We were mad that that the NEA PAID for it with our tax dollars and no one was held accountable for their lack of judgment.
Its one thing to accept the right of people to create whatever they like. Its also perfectly acceptable to note the hypocrisy of those who use public funds to display and fund their works and take particular note of those who enjoy insulting some but not others.
” One thing is that Charlie Hebdo takes no prisoners. They are an equal opportunity offender... “
Which is more than I can say for the Obama Admin, they are a “Selective Opportunity Enforcer”, see the IRS and Tea Party....
People are screaming for a country where things are consistent!
As a matter of free speech, I have no problem with a depiction of Mohammed on the front cover of Charlie Hebdo, even though a depiction of him in pictorial form is massively offensive to them.
As well, the Piss Christ is massively offensive to Christians.
Will society accept both? That is what I am asking, and all I am asking.
No terrorism in any form is acceptable.
But will non-violent Muslims ever accept a march like this along with non-violent Christians (which almost all are) and both sides suspending some dislike in the name of free speech.
Can people (be it Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, etc) put all religion aside temporarily in the name of free speech?

This is the worst that has happened by Christians in the last several years:
http://www.denverpost.com/ci_16270946
“A woman armed with a crowbar entered the Loveland Museum/Gallery on Wednesday afternoon and destroyed a controversial exhibit that some said shows Jesus Christ engaged in a sex act.
“The Misadventures of Romantic Cannibals,” by Stanford University’s Enrique Chagoya, has been the subject of a week’s worth of protests by those who claim it is blasphemy.
“It’s sad and upsetting,” Chagoya said Wednesday night by phone from California. “I’ve never had this kind of violent reaction to my art. Violence doesn’t resolve anything.””
Oh lordy lordy, she is worse than the Charlie Hebdo shooters.....

That is a diversion, along with the others.
We all know that radical Islamists exist and murder people who try to exercise their free speech rights. The point is, will society ever get to the point where there can be some Muslims who don't go around murdering people joining Christians who don't murder people getting together for a march and celebrating free speech as shown in the OP?
